Winter weather causes cancellations in Howard County area

School's out for winter.

That's not quite how the Alice Cooper lyrics go, but Mother Nature has kept school children at home so far this week because of a winter snowstorm that has hit the Howard County area.

All Howard County area schools -- Fayette, New Franklin, Glasgow, Harrisburg and Higbee -- canceled classes for Tuesday prior to the storm hitting the area. As of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, all five had already canceled school for Wednesday as well.

Central Methodist University delayed the start of school Monday morning to 10 a.m., but the Fayette campus was closed Tuesday because of the weather. Central Methodist also canceled classes on Wednesday.

Fayette City Hall also announced tonight's city council meeting has been canceled and will not be rescheduled. The council will meet at its next scheduled meeting on Feb. 18.

As more closing announcements come in, we will update them on this story.

With school cancellations, that also means no basketball was on tap Tuesday.

Fayette was set to host Marceline, but those games have been rescheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday. As a result, the Thursday's junior varsity games at Hallsville have been canceled.

New Franklin's home games against Sturgeon have been rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12, also beginning at 5 p.m.

Harrisburg's boys and girls basketball teams are competing in the Southern Boone Classic this week at Ashland. As of this afternoon, Tuesday's boys games have been pushed back to Wednesday, and Wednesday's and Thursday's games have been pushed back one day as well. The Harrisburg boys will play Southern Boone at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and the girls will play Linn at 9 p.m. Thursday.

Higbee's basketball games against Prairie Home on Monday and Christian Fellowship School on Tuesday have both been canceled.
