Former County Clerk Mark Hill dead at 58

Former Howard County Clerk Mark Hill died at 3:15 a.m. today (Thursday, April 17, 2014) at University Hospital in Columbia. He was 58.

Hill had served on active duty with the U.S. Army Reserves since 2008 and had been deployed to both Afghanistan and Honduras. While preparing to return to Honduras early this year, he fell ill with a severe blood infection and was treated at a Veterans Hospital. Initially, he showed signs of recovery but later relapsed.

On Feb. 8, 2008, after more than 13 years in office as clerk of the Howard County Commission, Hill resigned under  pressure in the wake of audits from both the Secretary of State and the Missouri State Auditor citing various violations and irregularities relative to election law and financial mismanagement.

A native of Howard County, Hill was a graduate of both Fayette High School and Central Methodist University. He also held a master's degree from Webster University. Before winning his first election in 1994, Hill had served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of captain. He also had briefly co-owned a business in Columbia.

His brother, Bob Hill, told the Fayette newspapers that a memorial service will take place in approximately a month.

Arrangements are under direction of the Friemonth-Freese Funeral Service in Fayette. A complete obituary will appear in the April 19 Democrat-Leader.
