• THE 8TH ANNUAL JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION happens today (Saturday) and Sunday. Activities were scheduled to get under way Friday evening.

• JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY 4K FOR CANCER CYCLISTS were scheduled to be at Fayette’s First Baptist Church Friday at 7 p.m. for a potluck supper. The public is invited to join and learn more about the Johns Hopkins efforts to fight cancer.

• DEMOCRATIC PARTY STUMP SPEAKING was scheduled to take place at the Armstrong Fire Station Friday beginning at 7 p.m. Ice cream and cake will be served prior to the speaking.

• THE FAYETTE FARMERS’ MARKET will be open today (Saturday) beginning at 8 a.m. on the courthouse square. Questions? Call Cindy Crowley at 338-5138.

• THE NEW FRANKLIN SENIOR CENTER will be open today from 1 to 4 p.m. Snacks, card playing, bingo and other activities will be offered.

• FLAG DAY is today.

• THE ANNUAL OPTIMIST FISHING DERBY takes place today, 8:30 to 11 a.m., at Ricketts Lake.

• THE FRANKLIN CITY COUNCIL will meet Saturday, 9 a.m., at city hall.

• FATHER’S DAY is Sunday.

• CMU’S ASHBY-HODGE GALLERY OF AMERICAN ART will feature a new exhibit. “Catching Light in Missouri: Photographs by Notley Hawkins” beginning Sunday. The gallery is located on the ground floor of the CMU library. A reception for the artist will be held at the gallery from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. that day.

• FRIENDS OF CLARK’S CHAPEL will hold a service Sunday at 5 p.m. The Rev. Arthur Barkey will officiate. Persons of all faiths are invited to join in worship.

• CHAPTER AU OF PEO will meet in Mary Jarboe’s home, 105 N. Central, Armstrong, Monday, 5:30 p.m., for a meeting followed by a salad supper.

• A KIDS KARNIVAL will be hosted by Unity Baptist Church Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. (See advertisement.)

• THE FAYETTE CITY COUNCIL will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m., city hall.

• THE OUTREACH LIBRARIAN will be available Wednesday, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., New Franklin city hall

• THE FAYETTE SCHOOL BOARD will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the high school media center.

• THE NEW FRANKLIN SCHOOL BOARD will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the media center.

• STORY HOURS are being hosted at the Howard County Library every Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Dr. John Byland will read to young patrons and assist youngsters with reading, when requested.

• HOWARD COUNTY WOMEN’S DEMOCRAT CLUB will hold its Summer Fling Friday, June 20, 6:30 p.m., at the city park’s big shelter house.

• SUMMER BEGINS Saturday, June 21.

• DEMOCRATIC PARTY STUMP SPEAKING will be held at the New Franklin Senior Center, Saturday, June 21, 7 p.m.

• THE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE has begun for the summer season. June meetings are Tuesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. (In July and August the league will meet from 8 to 9:30 a.m.) This is free for offspring of golf club members, second through eighth-grade, or $50 for children of non-member parents. • THE FAYETTE MOTOR VEHICLE LICENSE Bureau in the Commercial Trust Building is temporarily closed pending hiring of an office manager. The nearest office now is in Boonville at 408 6th St., with extended hours from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

• Moon and stars in memory or in honor of cancer survivors are being sold at Breadeaux Pizza, Howard Electric, or C & R Market. Proceeds go to the American Cancer Society as a project of Relay for Life.

• THE MERCHANTS AND FARMERS RELAY FOR LIFE TEAM is collecting aluminum cans. Donations may be dropped off at the bank, Jordanville Plants, or at George Hilgedick’s (no other forms of aluminum, please). Questions? Call 248-3337 or 248-3172.

• DROP BOXES FOR THE FAYETTE MINISTERIAL ALLIANCE FOOD PANTRY are located at C&R and Dollar General.

• THE PARENTS AS TEACHERS PLAY CENTER (located under the FHS gymnasium) will hold its summer hours Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 to 10 a.m.; the first Tuesday of each month from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and the second and fourth Saturdays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The Play Center is a place where toddlers and pre-schoolers may come to learn through play with their parents.
