Lightning is the culprit for brief power outages in the city of Fayette and a longer outage in New Franklin Tuesday morning.

All Fayette businesses and households were without power for about 15 minutes. Lightning struck at least two places: A point between the city’s power plant and the Central Electric substation located on Highway 124 and a pole on Watts Avenue.

Power was restored to most customers within 15 minutes. The 20 to 25 households around Watts and Depot were without power for about an hour-and-a-half. Power was restored to that area by 11:05 a.m.

New Franklin residents were without power for a longer period of time. At about 8:40 a.m., lightning struck a substation, knocking out power to all city residents. AmerenUE told city officials that power would not be restored for a minimum of two to three hours. As of press time, New Franklin residents were without power.
