Shirley Jeanne Painter died at her home in Fontana, Calif., on July 3, 2008. She was 85.

Born Dec. 1, 1922, in Howard County, she was the daughter of Walter Freeman and Frances Innes Freeman.

She grew up spending several years in the Fayette area and attending Fayette schools, as her mother was teaching elsewhere. Later she joined her mother in Illinois. During World War II she and several girlfriends worked in Washington, D.C., and were employed in government offices. She was a retired professional secretary.

She moved to California and married William Edward Painter. They later were divorced.

She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Rialton, Calif.

Funeral services were held July 8 at Dickey Mortuary and burial was in San Bernardino.

John and George Innes of Springfield are first cousins. She was a cousin of all the Innes families in Howard County.
