The Fayette school board met Wednesday evening to consider a fairly lengthy agenda of mostly routine matters pertaining to the beginning of a new school year.

The district’s operating tax levy for the 2008 year was set at $4.14 per $100 dollars of assessed valuation prior to formal adoption of the budget for the 2008-2009 school year. The board also gave approval to a long list of persons who have been hired to fill various support staff and extracurricular positions.

In action items, the board discussed pros and cons of changing the annual high school graduation next May from Friday to Sunday, either May 15 or May 17. High school principal Darren Rapert said a survey of parents and others indicated opinion on the matter was divided about 50-50. Fayette traditionally has used the Friday evening format, while the New Franklin and Glasgow districts generally have their graduation ceremonies on a Sunday. However, board members clearly favored retaining the Friday evening format, especially since going to Sunday would have a negative impact on the annual Project Graduation event.
As such, it was unanimously decided to have the graduation ceremony on Friday May 15.

In other matters, board members and school officials hailed word that another generous gift has been received from Jay and Kelly Jacobs. Jay Jacobs works now out of state for Pimco, a large West Coast-based financial concern, but still serves as board president of the Commercial Trust Co. It was announced that the couple has donated $56,000 for purchase of additional computers. Just over a year ago the Jacobs gave a half-million dollars for instructional technology.
Most observers now agree that the Fayette district, for its size, is far ahead of most comparable districts in utilizing classroom technology.
