• THE OPENING GAME of the 2008 football season for the Fayette High School Falcons was scheduled to take place Friday evening at 7:30 at CMU’s Davis Field.
• THE FAYETTE FARMERS’ MARKET will be open today (Saturday) beginning at 8 a.m. on the square.
• HOWARD COUNTY PROGRESSIVES will host a monthly potluck dinner Saturday beginning at 6:30 p.m. at 910 Highway 240, Fayette. Newcomers welcome.
• CMU’S ASHBY-HODGE GALLERY OF AMERICAN ART is featuring a new exhibit titled “Women In Art: Seventy Works from the Permanent Collection.” Hours are from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The gallery is located on the ground floor of CMU’s library. A reception for the artists will be held Sunday, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., in the gallery.
• LABOR DAY is Monday (see story).
• THE SIXTH ANNUAL BOONSLICK FOLK FESTIVAL will take place Monday, Labor Day, at the Boone’s Lick Historic site from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival features 19th century food, crafts and children’s games. The site is located near Boonesboro off of Highway 187.
• HOWARD COUNTY RETIRED TEACHERS will meet for a potluck lunch at noon Tuesday at Schnell Hall. Members are asked to bring a dish. Meat and beverages will be provided.
• A “DATE WITH DAD NIGHT” is set for Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Play Center (under the Fayette High School gym). Questions? Call Parents as Teachers coordinator Nancy Holtwick at 248-3686.
• THE WHITE-BELL AMERICAN LEGION POST 273 AND AUXILIARY will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Schnell Hall. David Inman will talk about his experiences in Alaska. All veterans and spouses are welcome.
• THE FAYETTE CITY COUNCIL will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. in city hall.
• A VETERANS SERVICE OFFICER will be available Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the courthouse on the second floor. Information and assistance concerning benefits for veterans, their dependents and survivors will be available. Questions? Call 573-882-5135.
• THE OUTREACH LIBRARIAN will be available Wednesday, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., New Franklin city hall.
• THE HOWARD COUNTY HUMAN SERVICE COUNCIL will meet Thursday at noon at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church on Park Road.
• TEAM SORTING happens Sunday, Sept. 7, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Howard County Fairgrounds. Questions? Call Glenn or Trish Hilgedick at 248-3712.
• FRIENDS OF CLARK’S CHAPEL will hold a service Sunday, Sept. 7, at 5 p.m. The Rev. Arthur Barkey will officiate. Persons of all faiths are invited.
• THE SOUTH HOWARD COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY will hold its monthly meeting Sunday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m., in the Visitors Center in New Franklin. A program will be presented by Glenda Wolf.
• THE 15TH ANNUAL FALCON OPEN will take place Sunday, Sept. 7. Shotgun start is at 12:30 p.m. To enter, contact Fred Eaton, 248-3118. Entry fee is $70 per team. Proceeds benefit Fayette R-III student athletes.
• THE CITY COUNCIL OF NEW FRANKLIN will meet Monday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. at city hall. (This is a change from the regularly scheduled meeting time of the first Monday of the month.)
• THE PARENTS AS TEACHERS PLAY CENTER has set new fall hours. The center will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 11 a.m., in addition to the first Tuesday of each month from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and the second and fourth Saturdays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Questions?
