• A CHILI AND SOUP SUPPER was scheduled to be held Friday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. in the New Franklin United Methodist Church. Chili, vegetable soup, sandwiches, homemade pie, and crafts available. Proceeds to benefit the church.
• THE FAYETTE ATHLETIC BOOSTERS were scheduled to hold a tailgate Friday before the FHS football game at the high school from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m.
• CMU’S ANNUAL HOMECOMING is this weekend. Highlights include dedication of the new Information Commons in the Library at 3 p.m. Friday; an all-class social hour Friday evening at Rosewood Antiques; the parade around the square beginning at 10 a.m. today (Saturday); ground-breaking for the new Mabee Athletic Facility behind Puckett Field House at 12:30 p.m. today; and Emmet’s Schluckebier 2008 event on the east side of the square following the football game today (see additional information on Pages 1 and 2)
• THE FRANKLIN CITY COUNCIL will meet today, 9 a.m., at city hall.
• BULK TRASH PICK UP IN ARMSTRONG is rescheduled for today and Sunday. Questions? Call Veolia Environmental Services at 1-800-778-7652.
• BREAKFAST will be served by Fayette’s Golden Study Club beginning at 9:30 a.m. today in front of Merchants and Farmers Bank. Drinks and other food items also will be on sale. Proceeds will benefit Girls Town.
• CMU’S ASHBY-HODGE GALLERY OF AMERICAN ART is featuring an exhibit titled “Women In Art: Seventy Works from the Permanent Collection.” Today is the last day for this exhibit. Hours are from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
• A RECEPTION FOR KAY BARNES, Democratic candidate for election to the Sixth Congressional District, begins Sunday at 3 p.m. in Schnell Hall. The event is hosted by former State Sen. James Mathewson and former Gov. Roger Wilson.
• COLUMBUS DAY is Monday, a legal holiday. State and federal offices, including the courthouse, will be closed. There will be no mail delivery.
• THE FAYETTE ARMSTRONG COMMUNITY BETTERMENT GROUP will meet Monday at noon in the Commercial Trust Community Room. Dr. Larry Peery will speak about the water regionalization effort.
• A GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP will meet Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. in Home Health and Hospice, 101 Furr St., Fayette.
• THE HOWARD COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL will meet Tuesday at noon in the CMU Student and Community Building.
• The All Year Round Club will meet Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Kathy Masonholder’s home
• The CMU Jazz Band will perform a fall concert Tuesday in the CMU Student and Community Center, fourth floor, 7:30 p.m. Free and open to the public (see story).
• The fayette young farmerS/ffa boosters will meet Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Vo-Ag Building. A lasagna dinner will be followed by a business meeting and a program presented by Gary Bagby.
• VFW POST 2914 will meet Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the Glasgow American Legion Hall.
• THE OUTREACH LIBRARIAN will be available Wednesday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in New Franklin city hall.
• THE HIGBEE COMMUNITY BETTERMENT ASSOCIATION will meet Wednesday, 6:30 p.m., in the Higbee VFW Building. For more information, go to www.hcbahigbeefair.com.
• THE FAYETTE SCHOOL BOARD will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the high school media center.
• THE NEW FRANKLIN SCHOOL BOARD will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the media center.
• CMU’S MORRISON OBSERVATORY will be open for fall viewing Thursday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Free and open to the public. Viewing nights continue each Thursday through Oct. 30. The observatory is located on Park Road across from the Fayette Swimming Pool.
• A PUBLIC MEETING will be held Thursday at the New Franklin city hall from 4 to 7 p.m. to discuss MoDOT’s proposed demolition of the viaduct at the south Highway 5 entrance into New Franklin. Information and drawings will be available for viewing in the open-house format. MoDOT representatives will be on hand to answer questions.
• ST. PAUL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH will host a pancake breakfast next Saturday, Oct. 18, from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Adults: $6. Children 4 to 12 years old: $3. Located at 300 E. Davis, the fundraiser is hosted by the United Methodist Men.
• SULPHUR SPRINGS BAPTIST CHURCH invites friends and alumni to a homecoming celebration Saturday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. Congregational singing, testimonies, special music and “old fashioned preaching” will be offered. A meal will be provided by the church. Directions to the church: take Highway 240 to 240 Alternate. Turn on County Road 442. Questions: Call Pastor Gary Humphrey at 573-698-2098.
• A HAUNTED HAYRIDE will be offered next Saturday, Oct. 18, at Kuemmel Park in Glasgow beginning at 7 p.m. Hayrides: $5. Bouncy House: $1. All proceeds to benefit the Glasgow Cub Scout Troop Pack 64.
• THE FAYETTE SENIOR CENTER will host a breakfast fundraiser next Sunday, Oct. 19, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• ABSENTEE VOTING for the November general election is now being accepted. Call the Howard County clerk at 248-2284 for more information or come to the clerk’s office in the courthouse.
• THE PARENTS AS TEACHERS PLAY CENTER, located under the FHS band room, will be open each Tuesday and Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m.; and the second and fourth Saturdays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Questions? Call PAT Director Nancy Holtwick at 248-3686.
