That's one tall plant



ROGER DANIELS holds a tomato from his 12-foot Better Boy tomato plant at his home at 400 S. Cleveland. Ray Kimmel, the Fayette Advertiser’s agriculture correspondent, took the picture Aug. 19. “It has grown about a foot more since then,” Daniels said.

Daniels attributes the growth of the tomato plant to his use of Angus cow manure as compost. Kimmel quipped about Daniels’ methods: He should use Hereford manure so he will “quit bragging on Angus manure fertility.”

Passing of FHS alum stirs school day memories

The sudden and unexpected passing of Deborah (Duren) Lincoln came as very sad news to her friends and schoolmates, some of whom appear with Debbie in a photograph taken at McMillan’s Café in January of 1999.

Fayette students experience kindness, friendliness during visit to Japan

Students plug their ears in anticipation for a loud pop that sounded after Vince Hilderbrand mixed two chemicals together in a science activity at Kawahigashi Junior High School. Students go to school year-round. “They are very driven to succeed,” Kevin Beeler commented. “There are no discipline problems.”


How does one absorb a different diet, culture, language, geography within eight days? The answer: Not possible.
But the Clark Middle School students who visited Japan had a good start when they visited that island nation from July 3 to 11.

They tasted an ancient culture that is at least 1,300 years old. Japan reportedly had an advanced civilization by 700 A.D.

O'Neal takes top award in horse pull Sunday



Mike O’Neal of Glasgow, with team of Bob and Todd pulled 7,900 pounds or 4,000 pounds over their weight to take first place at the 24th annual Kenneth Earl Memorial Draft Horse Pull Sunday afternoon. Reflections: R-III educators depart with words of wisdom

THESE FAYETTE R-III EDUCATORS were honored at a reception Sunday afternoon at Emmet’s Kitchen and Tap Sunday, May 18. With a combined total of more than 150 years of service to the district, they are retiring at the end of the current school year. From left: Ann Schafer, Jerri Carter, Debbie Drane, Skip Vandelicht, and Stan Varner.


More than 150 years of service to the Fayette public school system was recognized recently during a reception honoring five R-III educators who retired with the close of the 2007-2008 school year.

They are:

• Jerri Carter (30 years), middle school math;

• Debbie Drane (31 years), most recently TAP Reading and Title I;
