Lady Falcons look sharp in opener
 |
| A collision at the plate with the Brunswick pitcher ends in a safe call for Fayette junior CJ Roberts Tuesday. The run put Fayette up by two in the fourth inning. |
The Fayette Lady Falcons came away with a strong 5-3 win at Brunswick in Tuesday’s season opener but fell 10-4 Thursday at Sturgeon.
Originally set to open play Monday at home, the game was canceled as Bunceton will not field a team this year.
“It was probably one of the better first games that we’ve played,” said Fayette Head Coach Georgia Varner. “Usually we’re a little more jittery.”
Senior starting pitcher Sam Jacobson picked up the win. She allowed one earned run on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks in seven innings pitched. “Sam had a great game,” said Varner. “She pitched a really good game and a smart game.”
Certainly much of the credit goes to cleanup hitter Georgia Jent. The senior finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate with two triples, two runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base.
The right-handed Jent grounded out her first time up, but delivered two triples the opposite way down the right-field line in each of the sixth and seventh innings.

Falcons tune-up at jamboree
 |
| Quarterback Dalton LeNoir looks for an open receiver on play action behind fullback Ethan Boulden. |
The Fayette High School football team worked out the kinks Saturday night during the annual preseason jamboree. Fayette hosted Hallsville, Mark Twain and Lewis & Clark Conference rival Slater at Central Methodist’s newly refurbished Davis Field.
This was the first chance for the teams to see action against one another before the official start of the season Friday night. Falcon Head Coach Billy Huthman said he kept his offense fairly low profile in an effort to not give away too much before Friday’s home opener against Knox County.
“Our offense was very vanilla,” he said. “I wasn’t going to show anything. I’m pretty sure Knox County was watching. So I didn’t want to throw that much.”
The few passes by junior quarterback Dalton LeNoir showed promise. And a 40-yarder to senior wide receiver Ryan Sherman picked up Fayette’s second score against Hallsville. LeNoir called the play from the formation as an audible. “He saw the corners start walking out there and just checked it,” Huthman explained. “He looked back at me to see what I thought and I said ‘yes.’ So he checked it and threw it. That was all him, it wasn’t me.”
Sherman was a part of each of Fayette’s three touchdowns on the night. He scored twice against Hallsville. On the offense’s first play from scrimmage, he cruised for long yardage on a run to the endzone. Against Slater he made another 40-yard play, this time on the ground.

Falcons look to build on 2007 success
After finishing 8-2 a year ago in the regular season with a district championship and a playoff berth, the Fayette Falcons look to expand on their success. Head Coach Billy Huthman returns for his fourth year. And if his past here has been any indication, fans should have a great season for which to look forward.
Huthman was faced with rebuilding the Class 1 Falcons and managed a record of just 2-8 in 2005. A year later he led his team to a winning record of 6-4 and pushed the Falcons to their first district championship since 1994 for his third season.
Fayette fell in the postseason last year to top-ranked and eventual state champion Orrick. But losing to the best team didn’t wash away the sour flavor.
“We have goals and expectations every year. And we don’t think we met them last year,” said Huthman. “We had a great record. We got to the playoffs. But we didn’t finish. Finishing is getting to St. Louis and getting a ring.”
Huthman and his coaching staff incorporated a new Wing-T offense last season, also known as the spinner backs. “We’re in the shotgun every play,” Huthman explained. “The quarterback hides the ball and we have motion every play. It’s a fun offense. You never know who has the ball. And we have three different options to go with it.”
