A “Night at the Freddies” was warmly received Saturday evening at the Fayette High School gymnasium. Sponsored by the Fayette Music Boosters and headed by Sally Shoemaker, the sixth annual event raised funds for the Fayette School music program.

Residents air views on NF viaduct

About 30 persons attended a forum on the New Franklin Highway 5 viaduct hosted by the New Franklin city council Monday evning at the city park’s community building and some were not pleased by what they heard.

A Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) representative answered questions and took comments.
The same issues were raised as at previous meetings about MoDOT’s proposal to demolish the bridge and reconstruct Highway 5 on the ground.

Social Security rule change would decrease retirement benefits of some school personnel

FAHA tradition continues

Again this year the Fayette Area Heritage Association will sell commemorative Christmas ornaments to fund work of the organization.

This year’s historic pewter ornament will feature the much-missed McMillan’s Cafe, better known as Mac’s. The cost is $18.

Starting this week, FAHA’s Connie Shay will be at the Urial Wright Building (next to Home Oil) each Saturday morning from 9 to noon. Or you may call her at 248-2011 and she will make arrangements to get the ornaments delivered.

CMU museum selected for special hands-on learning project

Mid-America Arts Alliance, a regional arts organization serving cultural organizations in Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas, has selected Central Methodist University’s Ashby-Hodge Gallery of American Art here as one of 20 museums to participate in a Hands-On Experiential Learning Project (HELP).

Banner year for CMU but economy is concern

Saying “there is a tremendous spirit on campus,” Central Methodist University President Marianne Inman hailed a long list of high water marks which have characterized the CMU school year thus far. But a rapidly deteriorating economy could be a significant cloud on the horizon in an otherwise bright picture, she cautioned.

In what was dubbed an informal “state of the university” address, the CMU chief executive’s remarks came Monday during the monthly luncheon meeting of the Fayette Armstrong Community Betterment Group (FACBG).

Coast Guard: Buy Katy Bridge by April or it will go

A Coast Guard official said Thursday that transfer of ownership of the Katy Bridge in Boonville must be complete—or nearly complete—by next April or demolition of the bridge will begin.

At a public information meeting hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard at the Isle of Capri, USCG bridge administrator Roger Wiebusch reiterated what he has said before: to prevent the bridge’s demolition, an entity or entities must purchase it from Union Pacific by April.

“The key action in this process is ownership transfer,” Wiebusch said. “There are no other options.”

CMU chorale to begin annual fall tour Thursday



The Central Methodist University Chorale will begin its annual fall concert tour Thursday in Moberly and travel to 12 other Missouri communities over six days to perform in secondary-level schools and churches.

Directed by Dr. Claude R. Westfall, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities, the CMU Chorale consists of 24 highly auditioned singers who perform sacred and secular music in a variety of choral styles both accompanied and unaccompanied.

Members of the platform party stand at attention Tuesday morning during the annual Veterans Day ceremony at Fayette High School. It was attended by FHS students and those from Clark Middle School. Also on hand were a number of area veterans and members of the general public. The event is sponsored by the DAR and the White-Bell American Legion Post 273. • Two more vacant storefronts are now part of the downtown Fayette square. Closing at the end of last week was the Fitness Zone and Cafe Mosaic on the south side of the square. Originally started several years ago by Cord and Kathyrne Harper, the business included workout equipment, in addition to gift items and light refreshments including exotic coffees. For the last two years it had been owned by Jeanie Buddemeyer. Tax notices mailed

Again the tax lady cometh.

Howard County Collector Sharon Himmelberg this week has mailed 2008 Real Estate and Personal Property tax statements along with any delinquent taxes that may be due.
Anyone who has bought, sold or owns real estate or personal property that is not included on the tax statement is requested to notify the collector’s office at 248-2195 or the assessor’s office at 248-3400.
