Despite the recent high river levels, ferry service began on time Monday as the Missouri River bridge at Glasgow was closed. The service will be active over the next year while the bridge is torn down and a new one erected in its place.
As of about 10:30 Monday morning, the ferry had taken its first customer, a lone motorcyclist, across the Missouri river.
The ferry arrived just in time during ceremonies commemorating the historic bridge.
Late last week water was still over the access area on the Saline County side of the bridge. However, the water receded fairly quickly and the contractor was able to work throughout the weekend to get the access area ready for vehicle traffic.
Tickets for the ferry are $8.00 per trip if purchased on the ferry, and $6.00 per trip if purchased from the city of Glasgow. Oversized vehicles will require four tickets per trip.
MoDOT reminds motorists that the ferry service will not be in operation during high river levels or when the river conditions are not safe to navigate. To assist motorists, signs have been placed along many local routes in the area that will alert motorists when the ferry is closed for operation. Additionally, MoDOT will post that information on its website. Motorists can check the website at www.modot.mo.gov/northcentral/glasgowbridgeproject.htm or they can call customer service toll-free at 1-888-ASK MoDOT (275-6636) 24/7 and our customer service representatives can relay the status of the ferry operations.
