Former Armstrong resident Yancey Shiflett passed away at Golden Living Center Dec. 22, 2012.  He was 96 years of age.

Roy Yancey Shiflett, the last living of 12 children, born to Pete and Anna Maude (Wasson) Shiflett July 18, 1916 in Armstrong. He graduated from Armstrong High School in 1934.  Yancey was an accomplished carpenter who built and repaired many homes in the area. 

He married Virginia Lee McCully Oct. 4, 1941, in Moberly.  Yancey served in the U.S. Army during WW II in European African Theater as a bridge builder.  In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and coon hunting.  He was a member of the Armstrong Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Glasgow; two daughters, Joanna Shiflett of Moberly and Betty (Gerald) Wyatt of Glasgow; one son, Roy “Pete” (Roberta) Shiflett of Lawson, Mo.; three grandchildren, Jay (Debra) Shiflett, Jill (Greg) Fuemmeler and Julie (Dakota) Welborn and two great grandchildren, Crystal Cierra Beeler and Jenny Lee Lewis. 

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Bryan, Melvin, Jim, Jeff, Joe, Sam, Beach, Scott, P.W., Finnis and Tom.

Funeral services were held at  11 a.m., Dec. 24, at the Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Glasgow with Rev. Harold Young officiating.  Visitation was one hour prior to the service and burial with military honors was in Walnut Hill Cemetery near Armstrong. 

Memorials were suggested to the Coyote Hill or Walnut Hill Cemetery.
