Gussie Elizabeth Fisher Pettigrew died Jan. 3, 2013, at the University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics in Columbia. She was 96.
Gussie was born Oct. 8, 1916, in Fayette, to Mose and Mary Fisher. She was a life-long resident of Fayette except for a period of time when she lived in the Evanston/Chicago Illinois area.
She united with St. Paul United Methodist Church at an early age and was a member of the United Methodist Women and taught Sunday School. She served her church doing whatever needed to be done as long as her health allowed and continued wanting to know, “ What’s going on at church?”
She married Paris Baker who preceded her in death. Later she married Lee Pettigrew who also preceded her in death.
Gussie was a jolly person, who always liked to kid and joke. She was a homemaker and was employed as a domestic worker with families in Illinois and Fayette.
Her favorite passion was The Upper Room, scriptures, reading in general, word search and crossword puzzles and walking and getting out about town to see what was going on.
Survivors left to cherish her memory include nephews, James Broadus (Wynoia) of Columbia, Danny Broadus (Pat) of Atlanta, Ga., Norman Fisher (Susie) of Hollister, Calif., Steven T. Fisher of Fayette, Montie Ralph (Becky) of Boonville; Earl Turner of Fayette, Anthony Gaines and Rodney Gaines both of Columbia; nieces, Monette Jones (Lester) of Boonville, Lisa Williams of Fayette, Mari Warren (Ranard) of Columbia, Pamela Gaines, Bettina Gaines, Valarie Gaines (Tim) all of Fayette, Deborah Bynum (Randy) of Kansas City, Mo., Mary Coleman of Kansas City, Mo. and Ann Fisher of Boonville and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husbands, Paris Baker and Lee Pettigrew, an infant daughter, one sister, one step-sister, one brother, three nephews and one sister-in-law.
Jesus said, “Surely, I am with you always.” Matthew 28:20.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Fayette with Rev. Mike Jackman officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be at the Fayette City Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to St. Paul United Methodist Church.
