Ruth Alice Stevens Hart, 81, of Williamsburg, Mo., died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at the Audrain Medical Center in Mexico.

She was born Dec. 7, 1931, in Montgomery County, Mo., to Walker Warden Stevens and Bertha Marie Hudson Stevens. She attended school at Sunny-Hill Petonia and graduated from Montgomery City High School and then went to a summer of college before teaching school for a few years at McKittrick, Mo. Ruth married Melvin E. (Pete) Hart on Oct. 7, 1950, in Hermann. He preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 2005. She helped with the disabled at the ARC doing music  and Lyons Court in Montgomery City, Mo. She also helped raise ostriches at the Ostrich Farm near Mineola, Mo. When she lived in Montgomery County, she taught Sunday School and directed the primary children’s choir at the United Methodist Presbyterian Church in Montgomery City, Mo., for several years.

Ruth was a member of the Old Auxvasse Nine-Mile Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church Women and Quilters groups; she was a charter member of the Helping Hands Extension Club and did work for the extension council of Montgomery County and the district for many years; she helped found the Handy Helpers 4-H Club; and was a 4-H Leader. She helped found the Montgomery County Garden Tractors Pullers Association where Pete and her were very active. Ruth also volunteered her time at the Williamsburg Elementary School and quilted with the Williamsburg Quilters. She and Pete farmed west of Montgomery City for many years, before later moving to Williamsburg where she made her home for the past 23 years.

Mrs. Hart is survived by one son and two daughters, Randy Hart and wife, Toni, of Fayette; Sharon Steffan and Kathy Johnson and husband, Jim, all of Williamsburg. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren: Jennifer Johnson, Josh Johnson and wife, Kara; Kendall Johnson, Brandon Hart and wife, Melinda; Kayla Hart, Danielle Tyree and husband, David; Dustin Hart and wife, Brittany; Shayna Arcaia and husband, Gilbert; Elyse Wingbermuehle and husband, David; and Samual Steffan. Also surviving are step-grandchildren, Tara McCutcheon, Dana Fleming and husband, George; and Cory McCutcheon and wife, Stacie;  and seven great-grandchildren: Ethan and Alex McBain, Riley Johnson, Elaina Arcala, Zackary and Kyleigh Hart, and Kameny Prothro; and one step-grandchild, George Douglas Fleming; one brother, Joseph Stevens and wife, Marilyn of Montgomery City; two brothers-in-law, Harry Hart and wife, Dolly, of Jonesburg, Mo.; and John Hart and wife, Carol, of Princeton, Mo.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mrs. Hart was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Pete Hart; son-in-law, Steven Steffan; brother, Walker Warden Stevens Jr., and an infant sister.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Old Auxvasse Nine-Mile Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg, Mo. The Rev. Jim Cruickshank will officiate and interment will be in the Montgomery City Cemetery. Visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Schlanker Funeral Home in Montgomery City. Casketbears will be her grandsons, John Johnson, Kendall Johnson, Brandon Hart, Dustin Hart, and Samuel Steffan. Honorary casketbearers will be her granddaughters, Jennifer Johnson, Kayla Hart, Daniell Tyree, Shayna Arcala and Elyse Wingbermuehle.
