Gussie Bush, of Fayette, took flight with the angels on Wednesday May 29, 2013, at her home.

Gussie Elizabeth Bush was born May 23, 1930, to Mary Elizabeth Wilhite and Elmer Bush in Fayette. She attended Lincoln School in Fayette.

Gussie began her working career at the tender age of 12, working with her mother at Central Methodist College. She then went to work at Sigma Chi Fraternity in Columbia where she worked for 10 years. She finally “Got off the Road” and began working at Head Start in Fayette where she worked as the head cook for 33 years, until she later retired in 2006.

Gussie’s favorite past time was cooking and feeding those she loved. She always cooked in abundance so that everyone could get plenty and not be hungry. It was impossible to leave her house hungry when you visited her. She always made sure everyone was healthy and happy. She also enjoyed decorating her home in which everything had to be “just right”. She enjoyed frequent visits from her children and grandchildren. Gussie had a way with words and would tell you what you needed to hear, whether you wanted to hear it or not. She was going to get her point across one way or another.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary E. Wilhite, her father Elmer Bush, a sister Corene Stapleton, a daughter Betty Broadus, a son Terry Bush, and one granddaughter Patricia Bush.

She leaves to cherish her memory a family in which she loved so dearly. A brother Robert (Maude) Panel, a sister Mary Lee Key, four sons John Bush, Randy Bush, Richard Bush of Fayette, and Steven Bush of Columbia. Three daughters Vicky Bush, Shelia (Troy) Chapman of Fayette, and Elizabeth Bush of Olathe, Kan. She also leaves 20 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Funeral services was held June 1, at 1 p.m. at Faith Family Church in Fayette. Visitation was held from 12-1 p.m. at the church.
