Fayette resident, Paul Cleek, Sr., passed away at his home Oct. 31, 2013. He was 85 years of age.

Paul Raymond Cleek, Sr. was born in Howard County on Aug. 24, 1928, to George William and Cecil Margaret (Stockwell) Cleek. Paul was educated in the Harrisburg Schools and on May 20, 1949, he was united in marriage to Emma Gene Rains. The couple enjoyed 64 years together.

Paul’s early employment included work delivering ice in Columbia and for the Dewey Welch Construction Co. Later he was a partner in the operation of the Standard Oil Service Station in Fayette and was an officer for the Fayette City Police Department and the Howard County Sheriff’s Department. He completed his work years with the Street and Light Departments of the City of Fayette where he was employed until his retirement in 1990.

Paul and his wife enjoyed taking their family on vacations and showing them many different places. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, playing cards, gardening, tinkering in his shop, and helping his family with their many different projects. His greatest joy was time spent with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, playing with them and watching them grow.

Survivors include his wife, Emma, of the home, and eight children: Margaret Bollman of Moberly, Paul (Judy) Cleek, Jr., Rebecca Acton, Sara John, Mary (Roy) Widmer, Rozetta Cleek, Anthony Cleek and Christopher (Becky) Cleek all of Fayette. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and over 40 great and great-great grandchildren, and one sister, Mary Catherine Johnson, of Fayette. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Lee Roy Cleek, and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at the Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Fayette with Rev. Harold Young officiating. Burial will follow at Pulliam Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers. The family will greet friends from noon until 2 at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Pulliam Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
