Dr. John Byland, age 74, of Fayette, passed away at his home on March 6, 2014, following a long illness, surrounded by his wife of 46 years, Jacqueline Byland; his sons Paul Byland of Fayette, Sean Byland of St. Paul, Minn. and daughter, Cathy Byland Weeks of Jordan, Minn. Other survivors include a sister, Rebecca Byland of Wellsville, son-in-law, Christopher Weeks and granddaughter, Kivi Weeks, nephews Robert and Angela Byland of California and Sam and Lina Byland of Pennsylvania and their children.

Dr. Byland was born in St. Louis, Mo. to Dr. Samuel J. Byland and Dorcas Gallaher Byland. He graduated from Wellsville High School in Wellsville, Mo. in 1957 and from Westminster College in 1961. After serving in the U.S. Army, he attended Washington University School of Dentistry, graduating in 1967. He completed a dental surgery internship at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis in 1969, after which he and his wife Jackie moved to Fayette where he purchased the dental practice of Dr. Walter Ackerson. Dr. Byland practiced dentistry in Fayette for 38 years, retiring in 2007 when Dr. Jessica Quint took over the practice.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 19, 2014, at the Columbia Unitarian-Universalist Church, 2615 Shepard Blvd., Columbia, Mo. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Hometown Homecare of Fayette, Mo.

Arrangements are entrusted to Carr-Yager Funeral Home, Fayette, Mo.

A good friend and classmate for 12 years in Wellsville, MO. Families were very close. My deepest sympathy

John (Johnny) Byland was a very good boyhood friend of mine and next door neighbor. It is with deep sadness that I note his passing and offer my heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and in particular his wife and three children.

So sad to hear of Dr. Byland's passing. He was a well respected member of the community and also great dentist. Condolences to his family.
