Calvin D. Phillips, 81, of Liberty, Mo., passed away on April 30, 2014, at the NorthCare Hospice in North Kansas City, Mo.

Calvin Dwight was born on June 25, 1932, near Monroe City, Mo., to B. Bowen Phillips and Lillian Opal Secrest. After graduation from Fayette High School in the Class of 1950, Calvin enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served in Korea and Europe flying jet fighters, one was the F-86 Sabre jet. Later, Calvin served in the U.S. A. F. Reserves and was a co-pilot on multi-engine planes flying from Richard Gebaur Air Force Base, Belton, Mo.

Upon graduation from the University of Missouri-Columbia, Calvin was employed with Soil Conservation Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. He retired as the District Conservationist of Clay County, Mo. Calvin was a member of the Liberty United Methodist Church and for over 30 years, he was involved with the Earnest Shepherd Youth Center, Liberty, serving on the Board of Directors, Property Committee.

Calvin is survived by his wife Doris (Hackley) of 58 years and three children: David and Martha Phillips of Kansas City, Diane and Larry Carder of Overland Park, Kan., and Kevin and Amy Phillips of Westfield, Ind.; six grandchildren: Heather, Laurel and Dalton, Corey, Kiley and Conner. Also, two brothers-in-law survive: Harold Lloyd of Latham, Mo., and Leon and Bonnie Hackley of Fayette. Calvin was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters: Doris Koncz, Caroll Bailey, Kathryn Ford and Frances Lloyd.

Funeral services were held on May 3, at the Liberty United Methodist Church. Burial followed at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville on May 5, with a Color Guard, 21-gun salute and the flag presentation. Memorials are suggested to Earnest Shepherd Youth Center, Liberty, or the charity of your choice.
