Lifelong Howard and Cooper County resident, Joe Jeff Davis passed away Aug. 29, 2014, at his home outside of Fayette. He was 91 years of age.

Joseph Jefferson Davis was born on Aug. 17, 1923, in Franklin, Mo. to Roy J. and Maurine (Scotten) Davis. He graduated from Glasgow High School and Kemper Military Jr. College.

On Dec. 31, 1943, Joe Jeff enlisted in the Merchant Marines, then served in the United States Army in the infantry unit as well as in the Air Force during World War II. Joe Jeff and his brothers-in-arms fought courageously in the Rhineland and Central European campaigns of WWII. He received numerous citations and medals including two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart for his acts of heroism and meritorious service in combat. Joe Jeff was Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Army on Dec. 31, 1945. He recently received a Quilt of Valor at a special ceremony held in Fayette in July of 2013.

On May 27, 1972, Joe Jeff married Marsha Persinger in Osage Beach, Mo. Together they’ve enjoyed over 42 years of marriage. Joe Jeff worked in agriculture throughout most of his life, as well as owning multiple car dealerships including Davis Motors in Boonville. He also owned and operated the Highway Café Restaurant in Fayette and the Boonesboro Country Store. These were just a few of his many entrepreneurial endeavors. Joe Jeff liked playing cards, gardening, and tending to his lawn and flowers. He enjoyed watching sports on television, but truly loved watching his grandchildren play for his alma mater. This past year he and Marsha were chosen “Fan of the Year” by the Glasgow High School Athletic Boosters. Joe Jeff never met a stranger, and loved socializing and spending time with family.

Joe is survived by his wife, Marsha of the home, children, Jeff (Heather) Davis of Fayette, Tony (Bobbie) Hawkes of Huntsville, Ala., Stacey Hawkes of Jefferson City, Candace Hawkes of Columbia, and Brett (Sharryn) Hawkes of Bonnots Mill, Mo., one sister, Bobbie Dee Easley of Mexico, Mo., 19 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Pam Davis and Dianna Dale Shallenburger; one brother, Allison Davis; and one infant sister, Lavenia Davis.

A Memorial Service for Mr. Davis will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, at Faith Family Church in Fayette, with Rev. Greg Robinson and Rev. Don Arnold officiating. A Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 2, the evening before the service, at Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Fayette. Burial with Military Honors will follow the service at Boonesboro Cemetery.
