Fayette boys have banner day at Harrisburg

Fayette track head coach Tom Oakley probably needed some help carrying his packets of medals when he left the Lowell Eaton Invitational at Harrisburg. The packets were much, much heavier than usual.
The Fayette boys had one of their best meets in recent years, tying for second place out of 13 schools with 91 points Saturday. The Falcons were led by Max McKinney, who had himself a career day with three wins.

Eagles baseball sweeps Missouri Valley

Central Methodist won its season-high ninth straight game following a doubleheader sweep of Missouri Valley in Heart of America Athletic Conference baseball action Sunday at Estes Field. The Eagles also swept their second consecutive four-game conference series.
Central Methodist’s Kyle Poynter was responsible for all four RBIs in a 4-1 decision in the first contest. The Eagles charged out to a 12-run lead in game two and withstood a furious Vikings’ comeback in the seventh for a 13-12 victory.

Eagles hold on to lead in HAAC

Central Methodist swept a Heart of America Athletic Conference softball doubleheader against Avila on Saturday at the Zarda Multisport Complex. The Eagles won the first game 9-0 in six innings before picking up a 4-0 decision in the second contest, stretching their win streak to six games.\

Harrisburg wins Calvary Lutheran Tournament

The Harrisburg baseball team stretched its win streak to five games Saturday. The top-seeded Bulldogs defeated Belle 2-1 in the championship game of the Calvary Lutheran Tournament in Jefferson City.

Fayette golf team takes 10th place at Sacred Heart

The Fayette golf team battled the cold, sometimes rainy conditions Monday at Sedalia Country Club.
The Falcons finished in 10th place out of 17 teams in the Sacred Heart Classic. Head coach Kirk Besgrove said his team broke its goal of 400 at an 18-hole tournament, shooting a 386.

Area baseball tournaments to happen Saturday

The Fayette baseball team will be competing in the Lewis & Clark Conference Tournament, held Saturday at Moberly. The Falcons, the No. 3 seed, will play Salisbury at noon. Westran and either Paris or Slater will play the other semifinal game. The championship and third-place games will follow at 2 p.m.

Driftwood Outdoors: Youth turkey harvest down slightly

Missouri youth turkey hunters killed 3,915 birds during a weekend-long special Youth Season, April 6-7. The number is down roughly 10 percent from last year’s total of 4,319. Franklin County with 106, Greene County with 77 and Callaway County with 76 produced the highest number of birds.

Fayette wins wacky contest at Tolton Catholic

The numbers from Tuesday’s baseball game between Fayette and Tolton Catholic at Legion Field in Columbia are staggering, to say the least.
It took nearly three-and-a-half hours and three extra innings, but Fayette stole a 16-12 win, its second road victory of the season.

The long wait is over

More often than not, the high school baseball season is supposed to start in the later part of March.
The Glasgow baseball team didn’t start the 2013 season until Tuesday. And the opener wouldn’t be easy, going on the road to face a Harrisburg team that won three of its first four games.
Half an inning into the game, the Yellowjackets showed those extra weeks of practice were well worth it. Harrisburg went on to win 10-6, but Glasgow showed it was a contender from start to finish.

CMS girls track team wins at Salisbury meet

The Clark Middle School track team won eight events at the Salisbury Middle School meet held on April 5. The Lady Falcons won the team standings with 106.5 points, while the boys took second place with 120 points.
Fayette swept the titles in the boys’ and girls’ 100-meters. Jada Gaines won for the Lady Falcons in a time of 14.25 seconds, while Ahmad McCutcheon posted a winning time of 12.25 seconds. McCutcheon also recorded wins in the high jump, clearing a personal-best height of 5’-6”, and also won the 200-meters with a time of 25.33 seconds.

Fayette track teams take 10th place at Centralia

Fayette senior Nickie Foland has been placing consistently in the pole vault competition at track meets this season, but with improvement in his other two events, he came away with three medals Monday at Centralia.
Foland took a fifth-place finish in the 1,600-meters (5:13.49), then added a sixth-place time in the 3,200-meters (11:57.86) to help lead Fayette’s boys to 33 points at the Centralia Invitational. His time in the 1,600-meters is a season-best.

Greiwe named NAIA Pitcher of the Week

Drew Greiwe of Central Methodist has been tabbed NAIA National Baseball Pitcher of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Greiwe is the first Eagles’ baseball player ever to win the national award.
Greiwe was selected based on his performances from April 1-7 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated group winners.

CMU men’s golf team wins Missouri Valley Invite

Ty Lieberman and Brad Howell finished tied for second overall to lead the Central Methodist men’s golf team to a first-place finish in the Missouri Valley Spring Invitational.
The Eagles’ women’s golf team placed second in the tournament.

Fayette golf tops Salisbury, stays undefeated at home

It appears the Fayette golf team will finish the 2013 season with an unblemished record at its home course of Hail Ridge Golf Course.
On Tuesday, the Falcons edged Salisbury by two strokes, posting a team score of 183. Sam Zimmel had Fayette’s low score, an 8-over par 43. Kirby Schoephoerster shot a 44, Thomas Waggoner finished with a 47 and Nick Beckett carded a 49.

Clark Middle School track head coach Ryan Heaton wasn’t worried about winning in the team standings at Hallsville. Based on the number of athletes Centralia brought to the meet, winning the team title would be more than a stretch.

The New Franklin boys middle school track team edged Harrisburg for second place at Tuesday’s Harrisburg Invitational, scoring 99 points. Harrisburg finished with 93.

The perfect weekend

Perfection defines itself in many forms.
For Central Methodist coach Fred Smith, it means reaching the 100-win milestone in his final season as the skipper in Fayette. For Eagles’ pitcher Drew Greiwe, it equates to no baserunners. Central Methodist coaches and players were treated to both Saturday at Graceland as the Eagles swept a doubleheader at Chase Stadium by scores of 7-0 and 10-7.

Hull’s two home runs blast New Franklin past Fayette

Through three games, New Franklin’s offense went through a bit of a slump. Tyler Hull took care of that Friday night.
The New Franklin junior belted a pair of two-run home runs and Tanner White kept Fayette off-balanced for five innings on the mound, leading the Bulldogs to a 14-4 win Friday night at Estes Field.
