The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) of Missouri held the 79th annual Sophomore Pilgrimage in Jefferson City on Tuesday, April 9. The Fayette Golden Study Club sponsored Max Hilderbrand, Fayette high School; Abby Thompson, Glasgow High School; and Megan Borges, New Franklin High School.

Elliott receives DNR’s Operator of the Year award

Fayette city officials kept Wastewater Plant Supervisor Joe Elliot in the dark before he was awarded Department of Natural Resources Northeast Section as 2013 Operator of the Year. Elliot did not need to attend the meeting April 9 to earn hours towards his waste water treatment license. Elliot is licensed every three years and needs 30 hours of training/class room to renew his waste water treatment license. His current license expires in 2015. Joe plans to retire on July 1, 2014. So, he thought there was no need to go to Macon for training he did not need.

‘Justicia’ wins Best Picture at film festival

On Friday, Spanish teacher Gwyndolyn Weathers took 30 students from Fayette High School to the sixth annual Foreign Language Film Festival for Grades 7-12 at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.
Students studying Spanish, French, German, and Chinese from around the state of Missouri are encouraged to create original films in the foreign language to compete in this festival. The films are 5 to 10 minutes in length. Thirty-six schools from all over the state of Missouri participated.

Harrisburg honors coaching legends

Harrisburg High School took a moment during Saturday’s Lowell Eaton Invitational to dedicate the “Eaton Phillips Community Track” in honor of two great coaches, Lowell Eaton and Ivan Phillips.
Phillips, who passed away in 2001, coached at Harrisburg from 1966-90, and Eaton was a Harrisburg coach from 1975-2000.

Senior Central Methodist University student, football coach, artist and motivational speaker Keeyon Howard gave a presentation for the Art I students at Fayette High School. Howard is shown here addressing the class with several pieces of work including one of his most recent projects a painting of Marilyn Monroe. This was his first painting. Howard mesmerized the students with his talent and his life’s story.

CMU students, faculty honored with annual science, math, computer science awards

After a challenging academic year at Central Methodist University, students and faculty in science, mathematics, and computer science took time to celebrate at an awards banquet on Saturday, April 6.
Fifteen awards to 16 outstanding students, and one to an outstanding faculty member, were presented at the Division of Science, Math and Computer Science Honors Banquet, according to Dr. James "Tiger“ Gordon, division chair. Many awards included a cash prize.

More Than a Performance: Premieres of Student Compositions at CMU

Two music students from Swinney Conservatory at Central Methodist University have had the opportunity this semester to work on creating and polishing their own compositions. Now senior Brian Thode and junior Zachary Roberson will present a concert of their compositions Wednesday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Willie Mae Kountz Recital Hall on the Fayette campus.
The concert is free and open to the public.

CMU presents variety of music at upcoming concerts next week

The CMU campus will be swinging next week! The Jazz Choir, the Church Street Boys, and the Trumpet Ensemble of Swinney Conservatory, Central Methodist University, will perform in concert Tuesday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the Willie Mae Kountz Recital Hall on the Fayette campus.
The public is welcome and there is no cost.

Former Fayette CPA arrested on felony stealing charges

Howard County Sheriff Mike Neal reported the arrest of David L. Keithley, 60 years old of Columbia on three counts of Felony Stealing. Keithley is being held in the Howard County jail on a $75,000 cash only bond.

Chitwood receives prestigious ’39 Award

In a special ceremony on the steps of Jesse Hall at the University of Missouri, Katie Chitwood was honored by the Alumni Association Student Board as a member of the Class of 2013 Mizzou ’39 (the University of Missouri was founded in 1839).
Mizzou ’39 recognizes the top 39 seniors at the University of Missouri. The 39 seniors were recognized on the court at the Mizzou-Ole Miss men’s basketball game on Feb. 9.

CMU Service Day benefits community

More than 680 students, faculty and staff members participated in the annual Central Methodist University Leadership Service Day on Thursday.
The college community undertook more than 2,000 hours’ worth of work that benefited the cities of Fayette, Glasgow, Boonville and Columbia; the Fayette Fire Department; the Howard County Public Library; the Fayette City Cemetery; the Fayette R-III Schools; D.C. Rogers Lake; Coyote Hill Children’s Homes; local highway clean-up; and projects which benefited some local citizens.

House requires USPS maintain 6-day delivery

A spending measure passed by the House on Wednesday to keep the government operating through September requires that the Postal Service maintain a six-day mail delivery schedule, a potential setback for the agency, which announced last month that it planned go to five-day deliveries to cut costs.

William Hunt from Rocheport, recently received a Merit Scholarship from Blackburn College for the 2013-2014 academic school year. The Merit Scholarships are given to students based on grade point average, standardized test scores, and class rank.
