Glasgow resident James Vernon Lewis passed away at Lenoir Health Care Center July 4, 2012. He was 78 years of age.
Mr. Lewis was born Aug. 25, 1933, in Salisbury, Mo., to Harry E. and Pansey Mae (Bentley) Lewis, Sr. He graduated from Glasgow High School in 1951 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
Jim married Jo Evelyn Stroud Dec. 30, 1971, and she preceded him in death July 10, 2010. Jim was an accomplished tobacco and cattle farmer. He often had his farm on display for the University Extension Service. Mr. Lewis was an active member of the Glasgow Historical Society, Lewis Cemetery Board and United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Jody (Paul) Winn of Jefferson City and Wendy Duran of Glasgow, two step sons, CSM Frank (Jerry) Sabine Ashe of Columbus, Ga., and CDR John (Debbie) Ashe of Frankewing, Tenn., close friend and neighbor, Mike Meyer, 12 grandchildren, Jimmy, Vicki, Shannon, Gina, David, Doug, Carli, Darby, Dominic, Lewis, Derrik and Dawson, nine great grandchildren, Adam, Noah, Eleanor, Austin, Joe, Eli, Riley, Gabby, Emma Line, two brothers, Norris (Gus) Lewis of Armstrong and Harry (Bunk) Lewis of Glasgow, one sister, Virginia (Ginna) Hackley of Armstrong and a number of nieces, nephews and friends .
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, at the Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Glasgow with Revs. Jim and Jane Crooks officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial will be in Lewis Cemetery.
