William Henry Taylor, age 93, of rural Fayette, passed away July 21, 2012 at the family farm with a cigar in his hand.

Mr. Taylor was born Nov. 12, 1918, in Alta Vista, Kan., to William Harrison and Sarah Wight Todd Taylor. His family moved to Oklahoma where he lived until his sophomore year in high school. He joined the First Christian Church at Chickasha.  He moved to Missouri in 1933 and was a graduate of Fayette High School and the University of Missouri.

Mr. Taylor joined the U. S. Army Air Corps in May of 1941 serving for five years during World War II.  While serving overseas with the 64th Troop Carrier Group he served in England, North Africa, Sicily, Italy and was discharged as Tech Sergeant – Aerial Engineer.

While in the service he married Julia Ann Payne on May 26, 1942, in San Rafael, Calif.  She preceded him in death on Aug. 12, 1992. Mr. Taylor was Farm Manager at Carlson Hybrid Corn Company and worked for the USDA, was Territory Supervisor for the Ag Chemical Division for Gulf Oil Corporation and eventually returned to farming in Howard County, Mo. Also, Mr. Taylor was charter director of the Howard County Fire Protection District.

Survivors include William and Julia’s sons, Robert Taylor and James Taylor; three granddaughters, Shauna Young, Jennifer Swint, Stacey Kirkpatrick; a grandson, Josh Taylor and four great-granddaughters.  

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Duffy and a grandson, Todd Taylor.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at Carr-Yager Funeral Home in Fayette with the Rev. Harold Young officiating. Burial followed at Fayette City Cemetery. Visitation was one hour prior to the service.
