James Walter Kerr, of Fayette, passed away Aug. 14, 2012, at the Fayette Caring Center. He was 92.
Mr. Kerr was born Oct. 30, 1919, in Ashley, Mo., the son of Walter Carter and Frances Smith Kerr. He married Hazel Marie Gray on Nov. 7, 1945, in Bowling Green, Mo.
Jim served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Hawaii.
He attended the Rolla School of Mines where he studied electrical engineering. Professionally he was employed with IBM in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for over 20 years. Later he and Hazel owned and operated United Rent Alls for 17 years also in Poughkeepsie. Upon retirement, in the early 1980s, Jim and Hazel moved to Ft. Myers, Fla., where they made their home for several years. Jim and Hazel have resided in Fayette since 2001 to be near family.
Mr. Kerr was a member of Unity Baptist Church in Fayette. After he retired he studied Horology (clock repair and restoration) in Quincy, Ill., and enjoyed working on and restoring antique clocks. Jim had also been a licensed pilot and had built an airplane.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Hazel Kerr of Fayette. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law and brother in law, Helen Gray, Richard Gray, Dorothy Dougherty, Frances Wurtz, Gladys Wisehan and Nell Wisehan; 15 nieces and nephews, and several cousins.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Friday at Carr-Yager Funeral Home in Fayette with Rev. Allen Tippett and Rev. Clay DeWoody officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial with military honors followed at Siloam Cemetery in New Hartford, Mo.
