Caramel and peanut popcorn tins sold by local Boy Scouts during the holiday season have been recalled as a precautionary measure.

The Weaver Popcorn Co. announced the voluntary recall as a result of the expansion of the salmonella-related recall issued by the Peanut Corp. of America. The company's recall only affects the 9.5-ounce 'Trail's End Caramel Corn with Peanuts.'

The tins, which featured a patriotic Boy Scout theme, were sold locally in November and December, said Mike Miller, director of the Great Rivers Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

He estimated 12,500 tins were sold in the council's 33-county Mid-Missouri region, which includes Howard County.
Miller said he e-mailed notices of the recall to all of the adult Scout leaders for informational purposes but stressed 'it's not something we're seeing as a crisis.'

More than likely, Miller said, people who bought the caramel corn have already eaten it. The council did not receive any reports of illness from consumers.

Those who have opened the popcorn are urged to destroy any remaining product. Those who haven't opened the sealed foil popcorn bag can arrange for a refund by calling (800) 782-4255 or by e-mailing ccp@trails-end.com.

Fayette Cub Scouts sold a number of products in November and December and as recently as last Saturday. Local officials note that just the 'Trails End' product is recalled.
