The river at Glasgow dropped back slightly late this week to about 29 feet, but with rain and severe flooding north of here the river is expected to crest at 32 feet Monday.
Several officers with the Missouri State Water Patrol are on flood duty, with all additional manpower on standby in areas throughout the state. Flooding in Iowa and recent precipitation has raised concerns along many sections of the Missouri River and its tributaries.
In Holt County, the Missouri River is within a foot of the '93 level, causing many levees to be pushed to their limit. Water has overtopped the levee near the Iatan Power Plant in Platte County and is flooding the Bean Lake area. The Nishnabotna and Tarkio Rivers, in Atchison County, are near record levels along with the Nodaway in Nodaway County. The Platte and Grand Rivers are well above flood stages.
The Water Patrol is prepared to assist the citizens of Missouri if the need arises. Officers can assist citizens with notification and evacuation of an affected area.
Often times, the Water Patrol is called upon to help people who become trapped in flood waters (in their car, home or physically in the water). They will transport food, water and even mail to persons in areas that have become inaccessible by land. Water Patrol officers also provide a law enforcement presence in areas that have been evacuated to prevent looters from invading homes and businesses. Residents in flood areas are urged to prepare to evacuate if
needed.
Flood waters carry many hidden dangers. Flood waters usually travel much faster than normal and have the strength to carry large pieces of debris very easily. Flood waters can hide submerged power and utility lines, submerged debris and can drop off with out warning. They can also carry many biological dangers such as bacteria, hazardous chemicals and raw sewage.
Do not attempt to drive or walk over flooded roads. Vehicles can be washed away in flood waters as shallow as 18 inches deep. Anyone near flooded areas is strongly encouraged to wear a personal flotation device.
The Water Patrol is prepared to help Missourians in their time of need. Use extreme caution around flooded areas and be prepared.
