A new scam is now in the works according to Howard County Prosecuting Attorney Mason Gephardt.
It begins when someone apparently obtains a copy of a check that has been written (for example, a check used to pay a bill).
The scam artist calls and claims to be a representative of the bank upon which the check was drawn, saying additional information is needed. This may include one's age, account number, a new check number, etc.
Do not give any information, Gebhardt advises. Instead, hang up and phone the bank directly to verify that someone did indeed call you.
