To accommodate a record number of vendors for Santa Fe Trail Days, the New Franklin city council voted to cord off additional street space during the annual event.

At their regular meeting Monday, council members learned that some 60 vendors are expected for the 35th annual event. They voted to close North Howard Street from East Broadway to Merchant Street to vehicular traffic for Santa Fe Trail Days on Saturday. The downtown area also will be closed. (Council member John James voted against closing the additional street space on North Howard.)

In other business, the council changed the standard for drinking while intoxicated to be consistent with state standards: from .1 to .08 blood alcohol content level.

City Services Supervisor Dan Durdle related possible street light outages during the demolition of the viaduct and construction of Highway 5 on the ground. Construction will last 75 days and must be complete by May 27 next year. Council members felt AmerenUE or the Missouri Department of Transportation ought to pay for continued lighting of streets. Durdle will learn more at a meeting with AmerenUE and state engineers next Wednesday.

In a routine maneuver, council members approved an amended flood plain ordinance which puts the city in compliance with federal emergency management regulations. With the passage of the amended flood plain ordinance, New Franklin residents will be able to access disaster relief from federal and state agencies.
