A long-standing CMU Homecoming tradition is the annual contest to decorate downtown storefronts in the Homecoming theme. Here, members of Delta Psi Omega sorority perform their magic Sunday on the Peak Performance window at Church and West Davis.

Large numbers of alumni are expected to attend Homecoming at Central Methodist University here this Thursday through Sunday.

Major events include the Merrill E. Gaddis Memorial Lecture, which will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Student and Community Center. Other Homecoming weekend activities include an all-class social hour at Emmet’s Rosewood Antiques banquet room Friday evening, the Homecoming Parade through downtown Fayette Saturday morning and dedication of the Mabee Athletic Facility on the north end of Puckett Field House at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Homecoming Day activities begin at 10 a.m. with the customary parade around the courthouse square and through nearby streets. The parade will line up on Mulberry Street and go west on Elm Street to Main Street and once around the Courthouse Square. The parade will continue north on Church Street until Central Methodist Square on Spring Street.

Parade entries will be based on the theme “CMU Goes Hollywood.”

Featured in the Homecoming Parade will be the Central Methodist University Marching Band, along with area high school bands.

Grand Marshals of the parade will be Clyde and Sue (Weaver) Lear, members of the CMU Class of 1966. Clyde Lear is founder, president and CEO of Learfield Communications in Jefferson City.

Other participants include CMU President Marianne Inman and her husband, David; honored alumni; CMU sororities and fraternities; and a host of other college and community organizations.

Honored reunion classes invited as special participants at Homecoming include the classes of 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, and 2004.

Friday evening activities include the All-Class Social Hour at Emmet’s Banquet Room (Rosewood Antiques) from 5:30 to 8 p.m. ($15); an intra-squad Women’s Basketball Game in Puckett Field House, 7 p.m.; Men’s Soccer Game at Davis Field, 7 p.m.; Alumni Men’s Basketball Game at 8 p.m. in Puckett Field House; Class of 1959 Talent Show (all persons invited) in the Willie Mae Kountz Recital Hall, 8 p.m.; and a pep rally at 9:30 p.m. in Puckett Field House.

The Saturday schedule of Homecoming activities on campus includes the following. In addition to the registration in the Student and Community Center, there will be an Alumni Association welcome table set up next to the newspaper office.

• 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Alumni registration and continental breakfast, Student and Community Center Rotunda (persons may also register at the same location between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday).

• 9 a.m.: Alumni Baseball Game, Estes Baseball Field.

• 10 a.m.: Homecoming Parade around Fayette’s Courthouse Square.

• 10:45 a.m.: Class of 1959 meeting, Spalding Room, Student and Community Center.

• 11 a.m.: Gary Stoner Memorial Cross Country Invitational, Fayette Golf Course.

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.:  Tailgate, Inman Plaza ($6.75).

• 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Class Pictures, Inman Plaza.

• 12:30 p.m.: Dedication of the Mabee Athletic Facility, north end of Puckett Field House.

• 1 p.m.: Homecoming Football Game, Central Methodist University Eagles vs. William Jewell, Davis Field. Half-time activities: Coronation of Homecoming King and Queen and the CMU Marching Band. Sorority and Fraternity Teas, following the game.

• After the football game, Class of 1964 and Friends Reception at the Fayette Newspapers Office, 203 N. Main.

• 5 p.m.: Women’s Soccer, CMU vs. Benedictine College.

• 5 p.m.: Class of 1959 Reception and Dinner (invitation only), Dealy Room, Student & Community Center.

• 7 p.m.: Men’s Soccer, CMU vs. Benedictine College, Davis Field.

• The Stephens Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, and The Ashby-Hodge Gallery of American Art will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  

The annual 2009 Schluckebier Fest will be held in a tent outside Emmet’s Kitchen and Tap on the Fayette Square, starting at 3 p.m. featuring a Cajun Fest (see ad).

On Sunday, CMU’s A Cappella Choir will perform during the Linn Memorial United Methodist Church worship service, which begins at 10 a.m. (choir alumni are invited to join in the choir’s singing of “Beautiful Savior”), An Alumni Brunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Bergsten Dining Hall, Student and Community Center ($5.50).
