Long time Howard County resident Aleen Dougherty died Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia. She was 92 years of age.
Born in Moberly, MO on Feb. 14, 1926, Mrs. Dougherty was the daughter of Arthur and Flora Daggs Duffield. She grew up near Higbee, was educated in rural schools, and graduated from Higbee High School. After graduation she was employed at Brown Shoe Company in Moberly and by the local physician in Higbee. The medical training, she received there was to benefit her for the rest of her life.
On March 13, 1945, Aleen Duffield was united in marriage to Harry M. Dougherty. They enjoyed 64 years together until his death on June 16, 2009. After her marriage, Mrs. Dougherty settled into the role of farm wife and mother on the Dougherty family farm which had been owned by the family since 1884. There she raised her children and cared for her husband’s mother for the remainder of her life. She enjoyed traveling and camping but also loved life in the country with her family and with the birds and a number of pet dogs that found a special place in her heart.
Mrs. Dougherty is survived by three children, Sandra and her husband Wayne Wilcox of Moberly, Harry Arthur and his wife Brenda of Clark, and Clabe and his wife Julie of Higbee; six grandchildren, Tracy Audsley, Teresa Syferd, Marshall Dougherty, Chris Wheeler, Heidi Singer, and Walt Wilcox; nine great-grandchildren, Jesse and Justin Audsley, Greycen, Hargis, and Reed Syferd, Brooke, Zane, and Cash Dougherty, and Opal Singer. She was also survived by a nephew, David Duffield and his wife Sally. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Junior Duffield.
A graveside funeral service was held for Mrs. Aleen Dougherty at 2 PM on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in north-east Howard County with Rev. Harold Young officiating. Pete Agee, Jerry Ames, Derrick Agee, Randy Mauzey, Chris Huddleston, and Mike Perkins served as pallbearers.
