Summer is past its halfway point and school starts in less than a month, but a softball team comprised of players from Fayette and Boonville are still playing.
The Boonville 12U All-Stars, with eight players from Boonville and five from Fayette, are heading to Florida later this month for the Babe Ruth World Series. They will be in Jensen Beach/Treasure Coast, Florida, July 28-Aug. 5. The five team members from Fayette are Preslee Sunderland, Skylar Sunderland, Megan Lewis, Addison Newell and Kaylea Felten.
The Boonville 12U All-Stars played an exhibition game followed by three tournament games at the 2018 Midwest Plains Regional Tournament, held July 12-14 in Advance, Missouri. Boonville finished a perfect 3-0 in the tournament.
The exhibition game was played against Girard, Kansas. Boonville won the game 8-3.
Skylar Sunderland made the start in the circle for the Boonville 12U All-Stars. She pitched two innings, allowing three runs on four hits.
The team from Girard scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Boonville stormed back with five runs to go ahead 5-3. Preslee Sunderland went 2-for-3 in the game with a single and a double. Lewis and Newell each had a hit.
The first tournament game was against Tri-County, Iowa. Boonville won the game 12-1. Skylar Sunderland was the winning pitcher, striking out seven hitters over five innings while allowing only a run.
Lewis had two singles. Preslee Sunderland doubled and Newell hit a triple.
Game 2 of the tournament was against SEMO Tank Tech, a team Boonville saw during the Missouri Babe Ruth State Tournament. The 12U All-Stars won 15-6.
Lewis and Skylar each pitched two innings, with Lewis being the winning pitcher. Newell had two singles and two RBIs, while Skylar Sunderland had a single and an RBI.
Boonville’s third game was against Girard, winning 16-6. They trailed 6-4 until the bottom of the fourth inning, when they scored six runs to go ahead 10-6. They scored six more runs in the fifth inning.
Preslee Sunderland had a double and an RBI, while Skylar Sunderland had one hit.
Boonville defeated SEMO Tank Tech 8-4 in the championship game. Skylar Sunderland was the winning pitcher. She pitched three relief innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Preslee Sunderland made the start, allowing two runs on three hits in three innings.
Preslee Sunderland helped herself with a three-run home run in the game. Lewis added two singles. Newell and Skylar Sunderland each had a hit.
