Carol Ann Friedrich Burgin Smith
Carol Ann Friedrich Burgin Smith, 78, passed away August 30, 2018.
Carol was born April 1, 1940 in Fayette, MO, the daughter of Arthur Henry and Elizabeth Brockman Friedrich. She grew up on a farm southeast of Fayette, graduated from Dudgeon Grade School in 1954 and Fayette High School in 1958.
She was a member of the Moniteau Chapel Methodist Church and served as pianist for the church and community activities. She was active in the church and served in youth and adult offices of leadership for over 60 years in the United Methodist Church through the Annual Conference, District and local churches including United Methodist Women’s groups in the state of Missouri. She was Conference Lay Leader and Conference President of United Methodist Women and was elected as a delegate to four General and Jurisdiction Conferences of the United Methodist Church.
She excelled in 4-H Leadership activities statewide as a local club member and an adult leader. She was instrumental in organizing two clubs in Howard County and one in Boone County.
She was an organizing member of the Meals on Wheels program, The Wardrobe Inc. in Columbia, where she served as Chair after retirement from the University and served as President of the Columbia Chapter of Church Women United in the early 1970’s. She was employed at the University of Missouri in the Department of Agronomy, College of Agriculture, received the Chancellor’s Staff Recognition Award in the Secretary/Clerical area and elected member of the Chancellor’s Staff Advisory Council. She was also the Friedrich Family Historian.
She married Robert L. Smith on February 14, 1987 at the Community United Methodist Church in Columbia. She and “Bob” helped organize the Ashland United Methodist Church in Ashland and New Horizons United Methodist Church in Columbia after their marriage.
She is survived by three children: son, Barth Burgin (Cynthia) of Columbia, MO, granddaughter, Lauran Janssen (Chris) of Columbia, MO; daughter, Bonita Fitzmaurice (Dennis) of Columbia, MO, grandchildren, Connor and Ann Fitzmaurice; daughter, Reverend Bendi Burgin of Albany, MO.
Also, stepson, Mark Smith of Columbia, MO and step-grandchildren, Corey Smith (Holly) of Kansas City, MO, step great-grandsons, Corbin, Caleb, and Carter; step-granddaughter, Jessica Montgomery (Joseph) of Columbia, MO, step great-grandsons, Collin and Alex; step-grandson, Jordan Smith of Columbia.
Brother, Robert C. Friedrich (Louise) of Boonville, MO and nephews, James of Michigan, John (Stacy) of Columbia, MO and Tony (Carolyn) of St. Peters, MO and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Arthur Henry, Jr., grandson Quentin A. Burgin, and stepson Michael Davin Smith.
A visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 pm Friday, September 7, 2018 at Community United Methodist Church (3301 W. Broadway Columbia, MO 65203).
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 3:00 pm at Community United Methodist Church (3301 W. Broadway Columbia, MO 65203) with a reception to follow. Pastor Curtis Olsen will preside.
