Five area basketball standouts were named All-State by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association.
In Class 2 boys, Glasgow High School senior Jackson Meyer was selected after a standout season. Meyer averaged 27 points and 10 rebounds per game. Glasgow coach Mick Cropp praised Meyer as a “dominant force” who faced double and triple teams most nights yet still scored close to 30 points per game and finished with 2,039 career points. Meyer was named Central Activities Conference MVP this season and earned all-conference and all-district honors four times.
In Class 2 girls, two local seniors earned All-State recognition: Halle Fuemmeler from Glasgow and Lorelai Hunziker from Harrisburg.
Fuemmeler averaged 21.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 4.3 steals, and 4.9 deflections per game. Glasgow coach Molly Monnig described Fuemmeler as a four-year leader who centered the team’s offensive productivity. Fuemmeler finished her career with 2,107 points, which is thought to be the most in school history for the girls’ team, although records prior to 2000 are incomplete. Fuemmeler was a three-time Media All-District and Coaches All-District selection, and earned four first-team CAC All-Conference honors.
“Halle has been the focus of any team preparing to play us, and she still found a way to be productive each game,” Monnig said. “She has been an asset to our program, our school, and our community.”
Hunziker averaged 20.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals per game, shooting 46% from the field, 36% from 3-point range (62/169), and 74% from the free-throw line. A two-time all-conference and all-district selection, she was voted co-MVP of the district last year. She finished her career just shy of 1,500 points and helped the Lady Bulldogs appear in the MBCA state rankings all season.
“Lorelai is a well-rounded scorer by being one of the top perimeter shooters around but can also score in transition and in the post,” Harrisburg coach Jaryt Hunziker said. Hunziker signed to play basketball at Columbia College next season.
In Class 1 girls, New Franklin senior Lily Chitwood and Higbee freshman Ava Welch were honored.
Chitwood averaged 21.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 3.6 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game, shooting 53% on 2-pointers, 33.0% from the arc, and 84% from the free-throw line. New Franklin coach Parker Gross called her one of the best guards in the area. “Lily leads us in so many ways,” Gross said. “She tends to get the defensive focus from other teams and still finds ways to score and get her teammates open looks. She is the hardest working player I’ve ever been around and totally changes a team by being on the court.”
Chitwood finished her career with 2,160 points, setting a new record at New Franklin.
Welch, in just her first varsity season, averaged 22.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 3.7 steals per game, shooting 39.9% from the field, 29.4% from 3-point range, and 71.9% from the free-throw line. She earned Co-MVP honors in the Carroll-Livingston Activities Association, and was named CLAA Tournament MVP. Welch scored the game-high for either team in 18 contests, including matchups against strong opponents such as Delta, Lone Jack, Blair Oaks (Class 4), Boonville, Macon (Class 3), Salisbury, and district champions Norborne and North Andrew, as well as Brunswick. She scored 634 points for the season, which is tied for 13th-most by a freshman in state history. She also sank 92 3-pointers, tying for 35th in state history and matching the program record set by graduating senior Lauren Spilman in her freshman year.
