Bicentennial Quilt will be on display at Peacemakers Quilt Show on Saturday

The Peacemakers Quilters Group encourage everyone to attend the annual Quilt Show on Saturday, July 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the sanctuary of Linn Memorial United Methodist Church on the campus of Central Methodist University. The Missouri State Bicentennial Quilt, including the Howard County block pieced by Jo Rohr, will be the highlight of the show. There will also be more than 130 other entries. A slide show of the various blocks in the Bicentennial Quilt will give visitors a chance to marvel at the workmanship and creativity of quilters from across the state.

Admission to the show is free, however visitors are encouraged to leave a free-will offering. Proceeds from the offering a will go to the Fayette Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry and to the Peacemakers Quilt of Valor Project.

The Peacemakers Quilt Show is unique for a variety of reasons, the first being the setting. The beautiful stone church with its magnificent stained-glass windows provides a backdrop for the quilts which are draped across the chairs in such a way that the sanctuary seems to bloom with color. Wide aisles between the chairs make it possible for visitors to get close to the quilts without touching them.

The Peacemakers do not limit the entries to the show, as is common in many quilt shows. Instead the hope is to give anyone an opportunity to show quilts, whether the quilts were finished the week before the show or are family heirlooms which have been passed down from generation to generation.

Because the entries are not limited to a particular group of quilters, the Peacemakers show has a wider variety of quilts than many shows. Some of the quilts in the show come from the late 1800s. Some were purchased at garage sales and antique shops. Most are the work of the entrants themselves. They are all treasures and represent a variety of styles, patterns, and colors.

Instead of vendors who are often found at the larger quilt shows, the Peacemakers provide a Marketplace on the breezeway next to the sanctuary where visitors can purchase a variety of quilted and craft items made primarily by members of the group as well as quilt books and magazines. Proceeds from the Market Place will go to the Food Pantry and the Quilts of Valor project.

The show is held annually in conjunction with the Fayette Festival of the Arts. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival was canceled for the second year in a row.

The quilt show was also canceled last year, but hopes 2021 marks a spirited return of the popular event.
