The bridge on Spring Street next to Daly Elementary School was completed just in time for the start of school, after being closed for more than a year. The bridge opened to traffic on Friday, ahead of the first day of school on Tuesday.
The bridge closed in April 2022 when city crews noticed erosion had compromised the bridge.
The Fayette Board of Aldermen approved a singular bid in early June by T&B Trucking and Excavating, LLC, to replace the bridge at a cost of $418,593. The project was paid for by the city’s remaining ARPA funds.
Crews began demolishing the old bridge in late June.
The new bridge was to be completed no later than September 23, but was finishing a month early.
The lengthy bridge closure created traffic problems around Daly Elementary and the adjacent softball field, which hosts high school games and practices as well as the summer recreation program.
