The Central Methodist women’s soccer team ended its season Saturday night, falling 1-0 to Taylor University in the second round of the NAIA National Tournament.
The tightly-contested match was decided by an own goal in the 56th minute, the result of sustained pressure from the Trojans. Despite a strong offensive push in the closing half-hour, the Eagles were unable to find the equalizer.
Central outshot Taylor 14-12 and placed six attempts on goal, but Taylor goalkeeper Brianna Rawlings kept the Eagles off the board with six saves. CMU goalkeeper Amber Bennett finished with three saves on four shots on target.
Jenna Brouwer and Mariana Barreto led the Eagles’ attack. Brouwer recorded four shots, including two on goal, while Barreto also took four shots, three of which challenged the Taylor defense. Sara Garcia added a shot on goal, and Luisa Schaupp recorded two attempts.
Central Methodist finished with four corner kicks and eight fouls. Taylor applied steady pressure throughout the match, earning nine corners and committing 14 fouls.
The Eagles conclude their season with a 16-3-2 overall record.
