Dream Crushers take Sunderland volleyball crown

Posted

The third annual Wendy Sunderland Memorial Scholarship Fund Volleyball tournament was played Saturday in the rain and sand.

A record 14 teams participated at the Fayette City Park sand volleyball pit. Unlike last year when the temperature soared to close to 100 degrees, the rain brought cooler weather this year and made the day much more enjoyable for the participants.

The Dream Crushers, consisting of Cale Whitt, Connor Kavanaugh, Tyler Trosper, Molly Renshaw, Ali Trosper, and Jori Winn, took the tournament title and will defend their title next year.

“All proceeds go toward the Wendy Sunderland scholarship fund,” said co-organizer Tara Sunderland. “Our friends spread the word for us, and that allows us to draw in some out-of-town teams. This year we have teams from Hamilton, Higbee, Harrisburg, and Sturgeon. It’s good that it is growing.”

Growing so much, in fact, that the tournament brought in $1,500 for the fund.

Each year, senior girls from the Fayette softball team who have played all four years at Fayette, can submit an essay to the committee in hopes of being awarded a scholarship. The winner(s) of this year’s scholarship will be announced at a later date.

“We just want to thank the community for their support in helping us to build this fund, to honor our mom, and help some girls go to school.”
