Falcons lose season finale to No. 8 Russellville

Fayette faces familiar foe Westran in District opener at home Friday

Fayette kept a close game with No. 8 Russellville through the first half of Friday night’s regular-season closer, but ultimately couldn’t keep pace with the Indians, who scored three second-half touchdowns to pull away for a 41-26 decision.

The loss marked the third in a row for the Falcons, who end the regular season 3-6 overall. It’s the first time Fayette has won three games under third-year head coach Kole Hinton after winning two games in each of the previous two seasons.

The Falcons were without two of their starting seniors on Senior Night. Ben Dale is out for the rest of the season with an elbow injury. Austin Kunze was also sidelined with an injury. The Falcons dressed only 17 players, the smallest lineup of the season so far.

“We’re missing two seniors on the defensive line. That’s definitely a hard thing to replace. We also have to be more disciplined, too,” Hinton said.

Fayette matched the Indians touchdown for touchdown through most of the first half of Friday’s Senior Night game. After allowing Russellville to score on its long opening drive, the Falcons answered on the first play of the second quarter when junior Brodi Tucker punched it in from three yards out. The two-point conversion failed, leaving Fayette behind by one.

Russellville scored again on its next drive, but once again the Falcons responded. Fayette marched down the field and eventually gained a first down at the 1-yard line on an 11-yard run from senior Carter Vroman. The powerful running back then broke through on the following play and added a two-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14 with two minutes left in the half.

But Russellville wasn’t done. The Indians made a significant gain to the Fayette 18-yard line on a run from senior Jonathan Witt. They finally scored on a short-yardage run with 19.2 seconds left to take a one-touchdown lead into the half.

Fayette nearly tied the game again. Freshman Paxtyn Llewellyn returned the ensuing kickoff to the Russellville 47-yard line with 12.8 seconds left. As time expired, Fayette snapped the ball and passed to junior Ky Cunningham, who ran it the rest of the way to the endzone amid confusion from both teams and the officiating crew. Eventually, the officials ruled that Fayette did not get the play off on time, signaling the end of the second quarter.

The Indians scored twice to open the third quarter and take a 35-14 lead, forcing Fayette to play catch-up the rest of the night. The Falcons scored early in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard pass from junior quarterback Colten Cross to senior Caleb Craig, and again on a 25-yard pass from Cross to Cunningham with 2:31 left, but couldn’t overcome the deficit.

“I loved everything we did offensively. We put points on the board. The problem is we just could not figure it out on defense,” Hinton said.

Cross put together a solid night behind center, completing 14 of 19 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. He also rushed for 24 yards on five attempts.

Vroman had another impactful night, racking up 115 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. He also caught two passes for five yards.

“I’m happy for him and for all the success he’s had this season. He’s the heartbeat of the team,” Hinton said after the game. “I think our offensive line did pretty good filling in for missing those guys on offense as well. Our offensive line did a good job stepping up.”

The receiving corps had a well-rounded night as well, with Craig catching five passes for 28 yards and a touchdown. Cunningham made three catches for 55 yards and a score. Llewellyn also had a big night, making three grabs for 25 yards, including a 13-yarder.

“We had a play called where we felt we could get an out route if they didn’t cover the flats. We also felt like we could attack their guys, too. That’s a huge play,” Hinton said about Cunningham’s touchdown reception.

Defensively, Tucker continues to turn heads. He had 14 tackles (5 solo) to lead the Falcons on Friday. Cross added eight tackles (3 solo) and a tackle for loss. Vroman tallied 10 takedowns (3 solo), followed by seven (2 solo) and a fumble recovery by Craig.

Fayette now faces a familiar opponent to start the Class 1 District 7 Tournament. The Falcons host former longtime Lewis & Clark Conference rival Westran on Friday. Fayette defeated the Hornets 7-6 in Week 4 thanks in large part to interceptions by juniors Ky Cunningham and Brodi Tucker. That win earned Fayette home-field advantage in Friday’s district opener.

While the top three teams earned a first-round bye, Fayette (fourth) and Westran (fifth) will battle it out on Friday for a chance to advance in the postseason. The winner will face first-seeded Salisbury next Friday, November 7.

“They’re down three or four guys as well for the season,” Hinton said about Westran’s battered lineup. “The good part is we’ll get a couple of our guys back. That will help our depth on the defensive line. There were some things we looked at on film after the last game, and we knew we could’ve taken advantage of some things on offense. We should’ve put up 21 points at least. Defensively, we felt really prepared.”

Westran concluded the regular season 2-7 overall on Friday with a 65-6 loss at Salisbury. The Hornets picked up two wins early in the season, but have since lost six in a row as injuries have compounded.

“I think the difference between next week and Week 4 is the injuries. They will look a little different. They will have to have changed their style of play,” Hinton added. “We look forward to that opportunity and to hopefully get another crack at Salisbury after that. But we cannot overlook the first round.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Fayette on Halloween night.
