Fayette Bicentennial Time Capsules buried in courthouse lawn

Posted

The Fayette Bicentennial Committee buried two time capsules on the east side of the Howard County Courthouse lawn on Sunday, February 25. They will remain there until Fayette celebrates its 250th birthday in 2073.

Last year marked Fayette’s Bicentennial. Part of that celebration included opening the time capsule from 1973, which was buried on the northwest corner of the courthouse lawn. All of the items were relatively well preserved and were handed out to their owners during the Fayette Festival of the Arts in August.

A special moment was observed during the time capsule reveal in August when three of the four ambassadors returned to Fayette for the opening. As children in 1973, they were charged with returning to Fayette for the bicentennial. Dennis Street, Lorraine (Jackman) Sanders, and Roberta (Carson) Webster made true to that pledge, reading aloud the names and groups who contributed to the 1973 capsule. The fourth person, Edward Dickey, had unfortunately passed away. Of the 70 items in the time capsule, 50 were claimed that day.

The newest time capsule ambassadors are Aiden Allphin, Aven Bange, Alexi Bange, Morgan Bishop, Aubrey Bush-Jones, Glenn Ganaway, III, McKenna Dodson, Ella Doolin, Micah Estes,  Quinton Eubanks, Dani Ford, Zachary Ford, Maya Kelly, Hayden Kelly, Liam Menees, Beau Menees, Ben Oeth, Payton Oeth, Blakely Pettit, Katie Pettit, Hanna Quint, Thad Quint, Harper Strodtman, Oliver Strodtman, Jackson Sutton, Quintin Sutton, Chase Vandelicht, Drew Vandelicht, Julia Young, Carolyne Young, Easton Roberts, and Rylan Roberts. They will be responsible for returning after five decades to usher in Fayette to future generations.

The Bicentennial Committee hosted a series of events throughout 2023 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of Fayette. The committee also collected items to be included in the next 50-year time capsule. There were so many submissions that a second capsule was needed.

Lee Young prepared the burial site, and four of the newest ambassadors helped lower the capsules into the ground.

Inside the capsules are envelopes submitted by families, friends, and other well-wishers during the bicentennial celebrations.

“It is the hope that Fayette’s citizens of 50 years in the future will enjoy a glimpse of what our town was like in 2023 and will cherish the special memories left by their family members contained in the envelopes,” said committee member Gary Bagby.

The capsules were dedicated with a temporary marker on the north side of the courthouse lawn. A permanent marker will be placed there when seeding is completed on the lawn this spring.
