It was a tale of two halves Thursday night as the Fayette Falcon boys took on the No. 1-seeded Westran Hornets. Westran came out on the winning side of the 68-54 score, but not before Fayette showed what it was made of.

“We fought very hard tonight and I’m proud of the boys in so many ways,” said Fayette head coach John Bishop. “I believe in these guys.”

Westran started fast with a 13-3 run early in the first quarter before taking a 26-9 lead at the end of the period.

Fayette outscored Westran 23-14 in the second quarter to cut the deficit to six and make the score 38-32 heading into the locker room.

After the break, the Falcons pulled to within two points at the 4:15 mark and tied the game at 47 apiece with 1:52 left in the third stanza. Fayette won the third quarter 15-11 and was trailed by only two points heading into the final period 49-47. Westran came back strong in the fourth outscoring Fayette 18-7 to take the game by a final score of 68-54.

“We will see this team again in February,” said Bishop. “I know the players will be ready to compete against them.”

When that day comes, the Falcons will do well to remain cognizant of four players, in particular senior Leyton Bain and junior Landon Kitchen. Both poured in 16 points along with junior Ashden Dale who added 14 and senior Connor Tagai who contributed 13.

Fayette senior Dalton Collins paced the Falcons with a game-high 25 points while classmate Theo Owings had eight. Senior Tyler Bartholomew and junior Ben Wells each added seven while junior Hayden Kelly put in four. Senior Chris Brown completed the scoring for Fayette with three.

Westran went on to play in the championship game on Saturday against New Franklin which was seeded No. 2. The Falcons will play for third place against Sturgeon (6) on Saturday (see stories on page7).
