Fayette Festival of the Arts returns to the square Saturday

Posted

For one day each summer, Fayette’s historic courthouse square becomes a gathering place for artists, musicians, families, and visitors from throughout the region. Sponsored by the Fayette Area Heritage Association (FAHA) in partnership with local organizations and volunteers, the Fayette Festival of the Arts returns on Saturday, August 1, with a full schedule of exhibits, performances, activities, and community celebrations. The Fayette Festival of the Arts has grown into one of the area’s most anticipated summer traditions, showcasing the creativity, talent, and community spirit that make Fayette unique.

The historic Howard County Courthouse square will serve as the center of the activity, with live music beginning at 9 a.m. from the courthouse bandstand. Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy a variety of performances, browse vendor booths, sample food and beverages, and take part in family-friendly activities. A popular return is the Columbia Community Band, which will perform at 11 a.m.

Artwork remains at the heart of the festival with the 25th Annual Fayette Art Show, featuring both Adult and Student divisions. Adult entries will be displayed in the Ashby-Hodge Gallery of American Art on the Central Methodist University campus, while Student artwork will be exhibited in the lower level of the First Christian Church on Church Street. Both locations are air-conditioned. Together, the exhibits showcase the creativity and talent of artists from across the region, with awards and cash prizes presented in a variety of categories.

The Mary Jarboe Memorial Cake Show and Auction invites bakers of all skill levels to compete for prizes while honoring Fayette’s beloved “Queen of Cakes.” After prizes are awarded at noon, the cakes will be auctioned with proceeds helping to pay for the festival. The Classic Car Show will feature vintage and specialty vehicles displayed along Davis Street, with trophies awarded in several categories. A Quilt Show will once again fill Linn Memorial United Methodist Church with colorful displays of craftsmanship and creativity.

Families will find plenty to enjoy with Kids Korner activities provided by the Howard County Public Library, Parents as Teachers, magician Gerry Tritz of Mid Mo Magic Show, face painting, a bounce house, and additional children’s entertainment throughout the day.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, food and craft vendors, community organizations, children’s activities, artisan demonstrations, and live performances will keep the courthouse square bustling from morning until afternoon.

Founded in 1823, Fayette provides a beautiful backdrop for the event, with the historic courthouse, shaded lawns, and surrounding architecture creating a setting that perfectly complements the celebration. A shuttle service will operate between the square and festival venues on the CMU campus to make attendance convenient for everyone.

Residents and visitors alike are invited to spend the day enjoying one of the region’s most popular community events. Whether you’re coming for the art, music, food, cars, quilts, cakes, or family activities, you’ll find something to enjoy at the Fayette Festival of the Arts, August 1, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A full schedule appears on Page 7 of this newspaper.
