The City of Fayette was again designated as a Tree City USA. This marks the third year in a row Fayette has earned the designation from the National Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to effective urban forest management.
“Tree City USA communities see the positive effects of an urban forest firsthand,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “The trees being planted and cared for by Fayette ensure that generations to come will enjoy a better quality of life. Additionally, participation in this program brings residents together and creates a sense of civic pride, whether it’s through volunteer engagement or public education.”
The city will celebrate Arbor Day with a tree and flowering shrub giveaway on Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. on the Howard County Courthouse lawn near the bandstand. Persimmon, Pecan, Green Hawthorn, Black Cherry, Possum Haw, American Beautyberry, and Witch Hazel bare root saplings will be available in limited supply and with a limit of two per household. To reserve a sapling in advance or to obtain species-specific information, contact Bekki Galloway at bekkilou@gmail.com.
