The Fayette girls placed third overall as a team for the second year in a row at the Class 2 State Track & Field Championships last weekend in Jefferson City. The Lady Falcons were led by sophomore Rylan Roberts, who claimed first place in both the long jump and triple jump.
Roberts won the long jump on Friday with a score of 5.56 meters, scoring the winning distance on her second jump of the final round. On Saturday, she repeated as the Class 2 triple jump champion after setting a new state record a year ago. She once again made the winning jump of 11.55 meters on her second attempt in the finals.
Senior Browyn Eubanks made her mark again this year, claiming the silver medal in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 14.56 seconds. She also placed third overall in the high jump, clearing 1.60 meters.
Senior Payton Kindle added points in the 300-meter hurdles with a seventh-place time of 47.77 seconds.
Sophomore Eastin Hill qualified for state in the 800 meters, finishing 13th overall with a time of 2:29.55.
In the relays, Fayette’s 4x200-meter team of senior Chloe Bier, Hill, Kindle, and Eubanks placed fourth overall with a 1:45.82, improving on their school record from the week prior at sectionals.
The same lineup also qualified in the 4x100-meter relay, but a dropped baton in the prelims on Friday cost Fayette a chance at qualifying for the finals.
Senior Carter Vroman was the only athlete representing the Fayette boys. And he did not disappoint, claiming gold medals in both of his events. On Friday, he won the discus competition with a top throw of 53.62 meters, rising to first place on his final throw.
On Saturday, he left no doubt in the Class 2 javelin competition, further enhancing the school record books with a throw of 58.77 meters. The top throw once again came on his final attempt. He has now earned state medals with the javelin all four years in high school.
Harrisburg High School
Harrisburg athletes earned medals in five field events and one on the track. On Friday, senior school record holder Poppy Spry claimed fourth place in the Class 2 girls pole vault, clearing 3.05 meters.
Junior Kori Crane earned two state medals. The first came in the long jump with a sixth-place distance of 5.17 meters. That same day she qualified for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles, earning a sixth-place medal on Saturday with a time of 15.90.
Senior Bradey Simpson placed sixth overall in the discus with a mark of 36.78 meters.
Junior Addison Nichols qualified for state in the triple jump, finishing 11th overall with a mark of 10.24 meters.
In boys’ action, senior Rylee Robinson led the team with a fifth-place finish in the pole vault. He cleared 3.85 meters to earn a spot on the podium.
Senior Jonathan Darwent claimed two medals in the throwing events. He claimed sixth place with the shot on a throw of 15.40 meters and finished eighth overall with discus on a throw of 42.63 meters.
Fellow senior Bender Wardip qualified for state with the shot put and finished 11th overall with a toss of 14.28 meters.
Sophomore Nash Sublett nearly qualified for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles. He placed 11th overall with a time of 15.94 in the prelims on Friday.
Glasgow High School
In Class 1 action, the Glasgow girls earned one medal after qualifying in 10 events. The 4x800-meter relay team finished fourth overall on Saturday. Sophomore Maylen Parks, freshman Brenna Adams, senior Halle Fuemmeler, and freshman Kamryn Kottman medaled with a time of 10:24.
Two other relay teams qualified for state but did not advance to the finals. Junior Aynslie Locke, Fuemmeler, freshman Kenley Strodtman, and sophomore Maddyn Staton placed 12th overall in the 4x200-meter prelims with a time of 1:52.04. Fuemmeler, Kottman, Strodtman, and sophomore Riley Olendorff placed ninth overall with a time of 4:21.35 in the 4x400-meter prelims.
On the track, Fuemmeler placed eighth with a time of 1:02.62, and Kottman ninth in 1:03.05 in the 800 meters. Sophomore Maylen Parks finished 13th overall in the 3200m with a time of 13:24.60.
Two Lady Jackets competed in the 100-meter hurdles prelims. Junior Lay Prentzler placed 11th overall (17.21), and freshman Brenna Adams placed 13th (17.70).
In the field, Olendorf placed ninth overall in the high jump with a height of 1.45 meters. Locke tied for ninth in the pole vault, clearing 2.55 meters. Prentzler placed 12th overall in the Class 1 discus with a distance of 30.24 meters. Monnig added a 12th-place finish with the javelin, throwing for 32.17 meters.
The Glasgow boys took one qualifier to state. Senior Jackson Meyer placed 11th overall in the Class 1 discus with a distance of 40.32 meters.
New Franklin High School
New Franklin qualified for state in eight events and brought home five medals across both girls’ and boys’ teams. However, senior Lily Chitwood sat out of the 1600 meters to focus on her performances in the 800 meters and as a part of the 4x800-meter relay team.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better performance at the state meet from my athletes,” said New Franklin coach Adam Quest. “They were all ready for the meet physically, so we spent a lot of time this week in practice talking about the mental challenges of competing at this level. At the end of the weekend, I was proud of how well they were all able to perform despite the pressure that comes with the state meet.”
Senior CannaRassa Jennings picked up the girls’ first medal of the weekend, placing seventh overall in the shot put with a mark of 10.29 meters.
“Canna has quietly had a great season in the shot put, and she was very excited to finish 7th in her last meet,” Quest said.
Chitwood was held up by a tangle of runners while competing in the 800 meters. She finished 13th overall in a time of 2:38.96.
“Lily ran into some awful luck,” Quest explained. “There were two separate instances of girls falling in front of her during the race, and unfortunately, she was never able to recover the time she lost avoiding the traffic.”
Chitwood also anchored the 4x800-meter relay team. She, along with sophomore Belle Chitwood and freshmen Kallie Burnett and Kaydi Webster, placed 11th overall in 10:45.40.
“Despite only having been competing in the event for a few weeks, they managed an outstanding 11th place finish,” Quest said. “Lily has been one of our great leaders the last four years, and I was happy to see her finish her career on a positive note.”
Sophomore Quincy Dorson led the boys team with three medals across two individual distance races and a relay finish. On Friday, he took home a fifth-place medal in the 3200-meter race with a time of 10:06.52. On Saturday, he again earned a spot on the podium with a sixth-place time of 4:33.58 in the 1600 meters. Both finishes set new school records.
Dorson also anchored the 4x800-meter relay team alongside sophomore Mason McGruder, freshman Haden Davis, and sophomore Quincy Dorson, which claimed a seventh-place medal with a time of 8:41.16.
“All four of those boys are either freshmen or sophomores, so the future certainly is bright for our boys distance program,” Quest said.
Landon Shaw landed on the podium in his final athletic performance of his high school career. The senior placed sixth overall in the triple jump with a mark of 12.55 meters.
“Landon has put a lot of time into the jumping events, and it was great to see him finish his career on the podium,” said Coach Quest.
