The Fayette Lady Falcons concluded the regular season with a four-game win streak, capped off with a 4-0 shutout at Eugene on Monday night.

Fayette ace Skylar Sunderland earned her 400th career shutout during Monday’s victory. The junior holds a record of 16 wins and five losses in 21 games pitched this season. She boasts an ERA of 1.232 and has retired 178 batters on strikes out of 489 faced.

Sunderland has allowed just 20 earned runs on 91 hits this season. She also holds the team’s second-best batting average at .443 with a team-high 10 doubles and the most RBI with 32.

Senior leadoff hitter Addison Powell enters districts with a team-best .453 batting average and leads the team in hits with 34 and runs scored with 32.

Fayette coach Mike James said on October 2 that he thought his team was where it needed to be heading into districts but would know for sure after the Falcons took on Lewis & Clark Conference rival Salisbury. The next day, Fayette walked away with a 5-4 victory.

The Lady Falcons won the conference crown a year ago but could not defend the title. Their lone blemish came against rival Marceline in a 10-3 decision on September 28. The Lady Tigers will finish atop the L&C for the last time. Both schools will be leaving the dwindling conference after this year. Fayette and Harrisburg will help form the Central State 8 with six other teams. The Falcons have been members of the Lewis & Clark Conference since its inception 50 years ago.

The Lady Falcons are now 20-5 overall. It’s their fourth 20-win season in the last five years. Fayette is seeded second in the Class 2 District 8 tournament, which begins this week at LaFayette County High School in Higginsville, and will take on winless St. Pius X at 5 p.m. on Thursday. A win would pit the Lady Falcons against either third-seeded Sherwood or sixth-seeded Lexington at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Glasgow and New Franklin also begin their postseasons on Thursday in the Class 1 District 3 tournament. Glasgow earned the top seed and will host the tournament. The Yellowjackets face the winner of a sectional game between eighth-seeded Pilot Grove and ninth-seeded Bunceton/Prairie Home at noon on Thursday. Glasgow wrapped up the season with a 12-4 overall record.

New Franklin is seeded fifth and will take on fourth-seeded Norborne/Hardin-Central at 2 p.m. on Thursday. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Northeast 14-9 on Thursday to end the season with an 11-4 overall record.
