Fearn named CMU marching band director

Conservatory Dean Dr. Dori Waggoner to serve as Interim Director of Bands

Harrisburg High School band director Kevin Fearn will lead the Central Methodist University marching band starting next fall.

The Sound of Central Marching Band has a long and storied history of excellence, thanks in part to outstanding directors at the helm. With the recent retirement of Professor Roy “Skip” Vandelicht ’77, the role was left open for the next leader to step into those hard-to-fill shoes.

Fearn will join the faculty as an adjunct professor while continuing in his role as band director at Harrisburg.

Fearn, who along with his wife Haydan, earned a master’s degree in music education from Central this spring, says he is “deeply honored” to have been selected as the new marching band director.

“The opportunity to contribute to the vibrant musical traditions of [the Central] band program is both exciting and humbling,” he said. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the university administration, faculty, and students for entrusting me with this important role.”

Fearn says he discovered Central’s “impressive” band and educational programs 10 years ago when he began his tenure at Harrisburg. CMU quickly became the place where he wanted to continue his education. Now that he has had the privilege of learning from Central’s exceptional professors, he is looking forward to working with them as a colleague.

“I am excited to work closely with the talented student musicians, faculty, and staff to craft a dynamic season that showcases the band’s versatility and creativity,” Fearn said. “[My leading the band] represents a fresh beginning, a chance for us to come together as a cohesive musical family and create something truly memorable. I firmly believe that music has the power to inspire, unite, and transform lives.”

While Fearn will lead the marching band, Central’s chair of the fine arts department, Dr. Dori Waggoner, will assume the role of interim director of bands. Waggoner will lead the CMU Concert and University Bands for the 2023-24 academic year and will take the Concert Band on its annual spring tour. The 1992 graduate of Central is excited to have Fearn joining the team, as well.

“Mr. Fearn is an energetic teacher with a genuine passion for marching band,” said Waggoner. “During his time leading the Harrisburg bands, the program has seen growth in numbers and quality. We know he will be a strong leader for the Sound of Central.”
