The Glasgow Yellowjackets nearly picked up their first win of the season at Cairo on Monday, but the Bearcats walked off for the 3-2 victory in the bottom of the ninth to claim the Central Activities Conference game.
The Jackets now fall to 0-7 on the season overall and 0-3 in the CAC, with two more non-conference games scheduled this week.
Glasgow senior Bronson Foster singled to lead off the game, then scored on a passed ball with two outs for an early 1-0 lead. The Jackets went up by two runs in the top of the second. Sophomore Brody Adams walked. Then, with two outs on the board, junior Jaden DeMint drove in Adams with an RBI double to center field to put the Jackets in front by two.
Cairo evened the score in the bottom of the third when Glasgow starting pitcher Bronson Foster showed struggles on the mound. A leadoff walk, followed by a single, allowed two runners on. With one out, another Cairo single loaded the bases. Foster beaned the next batter and walked another to allow two Bearcat runners to score and tie the game.
Foster would get out of the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.
Except for that one inning, Foster pitched a solid game, striking out nine in six complete innings. He surrendered two earned runs on just four hits and four walks, facing 28 batters on the night.
Junior Blake Fuemmeler finished the game on the mound, allowing just one earned run on three hits over 2.1 innings. He struck out two without issuing a walk.
The next five innings would be a stalemate. Tied at two runs apiece after seven innings, the game stretched into extras. In the bottom of the ninth, the bottom of the Bearcat lineup provided a spark. Freshman Walker Bailey led off with a ground ball single to center and advanced to second on a ground out by senior Paten Ratliff. That’s when sophomore Tristin Messer drove in the winning run on a line-drive single to right field to deliver Cairo’s fourth win in five games.
Batting ninth in the Cairo lineup, Baily led the Bearcat’s offense with a 2-for-3 performance and scored the winning run. Junior Clayton Messer led the Bearcats at the plate and had the team’s only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Cairo logged seven hits on the night.
Glasgow tallied six hits, half of which came from junior Owen Colvin, who went 3-for-4 with a double. Foster, DeMint, and junior Andrew Cropp each tallied one hit. DeMint doubled and recorded the Jackets’ only RBI.
Glasgow has two more opportunities this week to break into the win column. On Tuesday, after the Advertiser went to press, the Yellowjackets traveled to Bevier (2-2). They return home Thursday to open a four-game home stand against Meadville/Linn County (4-3). On Monday, Glasgow marks the halfway point of the season with a home game against Class 2 Tipton.
