Harrisburg advances to district softball final

Harrisburg had just four hits in Wednesday’s district semifinal, but the Bulldogs put enough pressure on the Pilot Grove defense to advance with a 12-2 win in five innings.

The Lady Tigers put the first run on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, but Harrisburg took advantage of eight errors and scored the next 12 runs of the game.

Halle Baden broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run double to center field.

“We always talk about playing our best softball at the end of the year,” Harrisburg coach Steve Combs said. “You know, that’s any team sport, you want to peak at the right time. I thought we came out offensively and the girls swung the bat really well. We didn’t chase pitches out of the zone and when we got a pitch to hit, we hit it hard.”

Harrisburg added four more runs without a hit in the second inning. Two Bulldogs drew walks and two reached on errors. Katelyn Blakemore and Katie Starbuck each scored on a wild pitch. Olivia Fischer scored on a sac fly from Emma Fischer and Abigail Rosson scored on a passed ball.

As a courtesy runner, Rosson stole three bases and scored three times.

“I thought we stole the bases well and took the extra base when we could,” Combs said. “Just a good win to start districts. “

Bryanna Griggs doubled and scored in the third inning and Hailey Emanuel drove in a run with a triple to center field.

Bailey Combs allowed two runs on five hits and two walks over five innings.

Pilot Gove added a run in the fifth with a pair of 2-out singles, but Harrisburg caught the batter trying to take second base and got the out to end the game.

“It’s exciting any time you get to extend your season,” Combs said.” We’ve got a bunch of seniors here who have been around a long time, and we’re just trying to extend for another day.

“Tomorrow is a chance to play for a big trophy and were excited for it.”
