Harrisburg stays in conference title contention with win at Scotland County

The Harrisburg defense gave up nearly 400 yards, but allowed just six points in a 22-6 win at Scotland County on Friday night.

The Bulldog offense scored twice on plays of at least 75 yards, putting themselves in a position to play for a share of the Lewis & Clark Conference title in the final game of the regular season.

Tiger quarterback Hayden Long completed six passes for 106 yards and rushed for 133 more on 17 carries, but Harrisburg came up with big stops and turnovers in critical moments.

“To be honest, we simply were able to get a few more men to the point of attack when they got the ball inside the 10-yard line, since we didn't have to worry about long passes,” Harrisburg coach Steven Hopkins explained. “And by doing that, we stopped their run game, and then the two turnovers were huge.”

Bulldog quarterback and defensive back Tanner Lanes forced and recovered a fumble, and then picked off a pass as well.

“We got pressure on the Interception and he had to throw it early, which allowed Tanner to step in front and pick it off for his interception,” Hopkins said.

Leading 14-6 in the third quarter, Wyatt Robinson caught a screen pass from Lanes and went 85 yards for the only points of the second half.

“It was really well blocked by our offensive line, especially Brayton Stephenson and Logan Fritts, who both got downfield and engaged a linebacker and the corner,” Hopkins said. “And then we caught them in a blitz on third and long, so he had no one in front of him until about 30 yards downfield. He made one man miss and was gone.”

Robinson finished with 221 rushing yards and 315 yards total. Lanes completed 7-15 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns. Jace Carr caught three passes for 48 yards and Kevin Raines had one catch of 29 yards.

Tanner Fike had a five-yard touchdown reception, which put Harrisburg ahead 14-0 in the first quarter.

“Our offense was able to move the ball, with a nice mix of running and passing, but it was hit and miss at times, as (the Tigers) are solid defensively also,” Hopkins said.

“We still had some success, but we had poor field position a lot, and that made sustaining long drives really tough.

“The good news was we stopped them defensively inside our 20, but the bad news was then we had 80 plus yards to go on most drives.”

The Bulldogs scored the first touchdown of the game on a 75-yard run by Robinson.

“It was a vertical run play, but one we haven't run before, so we may have caught them off guard,” Hopkins said.

“Once Wyatt hit the third level, as we were able to block level one and two, he made a move and was gone.”

Robinson also had 12 tackles on the defensive side. Raines and Dayton Samuels each had a dozen stops as well. Fike had 12 tackles and a sack. Gavin Curtis had nine tackles.

Harrisburg (6-2) finishes the regular season with a trip to Marceline (7-1), who claimed sole possession of first place in the conference with a 45-6 win over Westran.
