Higbee awarded grant to raze commercial buildings

Posted

The City of Higbee has been awarded $324,170 through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program to demolish five commercial properties in the downtown area.

Funds from the CDBG grants will be used to support the demolition of structures in various stages of disrepair that pose a threat to the health and safety of the residents. By removing these dilapidated structures, Higbee aims to improve community aesthetics and foster a safer environment for all residents.

“We are extremely grateful for this grant and excited about the opportunities it brings to our community,” said Higbee Mayor Ricky Switzer.

The demolition project is expected to begin after several required activities are completed, including asbestos inspections to identify possible contaminants in the structures. Once the project goes out to bid, a contractor will be secured to complete the demolition of the structures. Owners of the property are aware that their buildings are on the list and have agreed to be a part of the demolition process.

The grant application was developed in partnership between the City of Higbee and the Mark Twain Regional Council of Governments, which will continue to work as the project’s grant administrator. Mark Twain Regional Council of Governments provides a wide range of professional services to its member governments to address important issues that impact the quality of life of the residents within the region.
